Letter book 1, 11 December 1793-17 March 1809
Includes business letters of the firm of Silvanus and Obed Macy to merchants in Boston, Baltimore, Providence, New York, and Philadelphia, especially Elisha Sigourney, David Anthony and Timothy Green, agreeing to sell oil and candles. Many references to coastal shipping by Nantucket sloops and schooners. Also letters from Silvanus Macy to captains of ships in which the Macy's had an interest and to insurance companies concerning premiums.

Nantucket 15th 6 mo [MONTH] 1795 Estemed [ESTEEMED] Friend Elisha Sigourney We received thine 14th requesting our candles should be glad if not sold thou would reship them to us to be docterd [DOCTORED?] anew. We have to acknowledge they were made in cold wether [WEATHER] & we suppose laying over the summer caused the alleviation in looks but we have now a good stock on hand & shall endeavor to have them manufactured so that they may stand the test in low Lat [LATITUDE?] so as not to soile [SOIL] the paper. We are in immediate want of 4 or 6 dozen dzn [DOZEN?] got after being rather disappointed [PS?] [HUDRON?] should be glad thou would send us the above named quantity first opportunity & we shall when made forward candles to thy address. Suitable for the receipt [INSPED?] with respect we remain they friends Silvanus & Obed Macy NB Understand by Isaac Coffin some person had conveyed information to thee of my being one of the persons that stole the money from the Nantucket Bank & may inform thee that at present in our particular town & [FORWARD?] not lay & amaze at present higher than 3 cents by way of deffamation [DEFAMATION] Silvanus Macy Jr.

Nantucket 2nd mo 1746 Esteemed friend Elisha Sigourney We have shipped to thy address in the ship {???] Capt. Chase 5.4 honey sperm candles stamped verry [VERY] clumsy but candles good. Please to sell the same & place the proceeds to our account. We shall by next opportunity have a larger quantity. From they friend, Silvanus J. Macy NB The invoice Capt. Cleave will hand the = we received the ashes in good order.

Nantucket 2 mo 15th 1796 Esteemed friend Elisha Sigourney This may inform we received thine [???] date 4th mo with our account which is to satisfaction. We received thine 15th 2 mo informing the arrival of the candles we sent. An invoice Capt. Chase of the candles shipped in Ship Tron. We now send the invoice of the candles [???] A G & [GALLYNECK?] 30 boxes by Gallyneck 859 9/4 66 [???] by A Gardner 1969 we may further inform as spring opens we shall have more candles of the best quality & would wish the to govern accordingly & give us a few lines on the accation [OCCASION?] From they friend S O Macy NB: If Abner Coffin should call for any money please to let him have on our account & thou will ablidge {OBLIGE] us. Nantucket 25th 3 mo 1796 Esteemed Friend Elisha Sigourney We have shipped to the address in Schooner Pumona, Capt. George Gardner, 40 boxes sperm candles branded P & M. Please to sell the ame and place it to our account. An invoice of which is her included. Shall have more to send by the next opportunity. We have given William Macy an order on thee for 18:12:7 pounds which when comes to hand please to furnish him with the amount & place the same to our account which will oblige us. Nantucket 11th 1 mo 1776 Esteemed Friend Elisha Sigourney We received thine 9th the contents satisfactory. We requested Elisha Macy to drive the [???]us ten barrel. [???] sort [POTATOES?] his omitting it we now desire thou will send us first opportunity five barrels as we are in present want & please the same to thy friends. Silvanus Macy
