Includes business letters of the firm of Silvanus and Obed Macy to merchants in Boston, Baltimore, Providence, New York, and Philadelphia, especially Elisha Sigourney, David Anthony and Timothy Green, agreeing to sell oil and candles. Many references to coastal shipping by Nantucket sloops and schooners. Also letters from Silvanus Macy to captains of ships in which the Macy's had an interest and to insurance companies concerning premiums.

Nantucket 3 mo [MONTH] 10th 1794 Esteemed Friend Elisha Sigourney thy Letter 12th mo [MONTH] we have not answered Until this opportunity by Reason we was in some calculation of making use of the [???] vessels our S [SHIP?] Macy being Absent for Balt [BALTIMORE] but some Returned & we find the [???] [???] Dispose of it to Advantage therefore Shall leave the Matter as tho we Never was Advised of it he Seth Informed us candles in BALT [BALTIMORE] was worth [???] [???] [???] Every appearance for their being of therefore we may Resonable Expect they will take a Start in this State = 6 [FLOORS?] 491 currency Ship [BRED?] 181 of every thing at that market on the [RYE?] of money to plenty foreign Trade We Just Mention the Above for thy Private View Resting Satisfyd [SATISFIED] with thy conduct as to our Business heretofore Remain thy friend S O [SILVANUS & OBED] Macy

Nantucket 12th 8 mo [MONTH] 1796 Esteemed friend May of Payson this may inform that the Schooner Sherborn Nicholas Meader Master Sales [SAILS?] to morrow [TOMORROW] for your Part at my Arrival I found the Schooner was [SET?] too high (as I thot [THOUGHT] for your Interest) for me to Purchase her on your Act [ACCOUNT] so that at Present She remains ownd [OWNED] as heretofore as oyl [OIL] she is loaded on Act [ACCOUNT] of [JHIMMEL & HEIDE?] oyl [OIL] Being so high that I expect as you have some on hand & we look for 3 Long ships in about 5 Weeks that it might be as well to suspend the Purchase Untill [UNTIL] Next Trip [???] the [REFUND?] of 150 [BARRELS?] of it as it was Laid in But Rather Chose to Let Alone on your Act [ACCOUNT] for Reasons as Above is Capt [POUNDS STERLING?] 21 [LINONY?] ton & as it was Bound they muss [MUST?] pay 10/8 [PERCENT?] ton for Cooperage per ton [BENDES?] other changes so that I have made a [CAPT?] & find it will cost them 9 3/4 Dollars [???] Nearly we have shipt [SHIPPED] [???] Bones [SPALM?] cand [CANDLES] as [PER?] Invoice to your Address, Requesting you will Sell thm on our Act [ACCOUNT] & ship 170 [BARRELS] common Flour & Ballance [BALANCE] in [PART?] by Capt Meader as we have made a Small Speech Should be glad to have them Sold Unless you must make a Sacrifise [SACRIFICE] of them in that case you will hold them for a Better Market our second Quality Candles will be Ready Next Trip Not Doubling your Exertions for our [INTERESTS?] as far as the case may Require we Remain your Friend Sivl [SILVANUS] & Obed Macy PS we Expect they will Send New orders at the Return of the Vessel for her to be sold Should be glad to Still have your Advice Respecting her Look over Leafe [LEAF]

Nantucket 10th 10mo [MONTH] 1794 Esteemed Friend Elisha Sigourney This may inform that we expect to have in the course of 5 weeks about Thirty four Ton of Strained Sperm Oil fit for the Market Should be glad to hear what prospect for a Market appears in Boston. We would with nothing binding in talk without further advice from thy Friends S [SILVANUS] [AND] O [OBED] Macy Esteemed Friend Elisha Sigourney We Received thine [???] Capt Coffin & Note the contents we are sorry to learn of some of our candles rather oyly [OILY]. We should wish either have them sent here first opportunity or have them [REPACKED?] in Boston if it will Put them on a footing for Sale which ever is for our Interest Please to [ETE?] upon for in case they must come Back the sooner the Better So that we can Replace them or other for Sale We shall Request Capt Barns to Join in with thee to take them here if you think it Best we cant tell Being here which is Best as it's Rather Delicate making a Parade of the matter owing to Consequences thou Can Easily Guess therefore shall Leave the matter for the Act.
