Letter book 1, 11 December 1793-17 March 1809
Includes business letters of the firm of Silvanus and Obed Macy to merchants in Boston, Baltimore, Providence, New York, and Philadelphia, especially Elisha Sigourney, David Anthony and Timothy Green, agreeing to sell oil and candles. Many references to coastal shipping by Nantucket sloops and schooners. Also letters from Silvanus Macy to captains of ships in which the Macy's had an interest and to insurance companies concerning premiums.

Nantucket 23rd 3 mo [MONTH] 1797 Respected Friend Mary Butler of Martha's Vineyard I received thine of the 20th instance & notes the contents & have put on bord [BOARD] Capt. [CAPTAIN] Pease one bl [BARREL] of flour for thee & hope it will be satisfactory. I am in the hopes thy husband success will be such as to make his cruzes [CRUISES] shorter than what thou stated trusting in Providence that he seese [SEES] what is best for us & can it be a [PHEASEET?] turn the whales for thy husband's benefit so in love remain thy Friend.
