Letter book 1, 11 December 1793-17 March 1809
Includes business letters of the firm of Silvanus and Obed Macy to merchants in Boston, Baltimore, Providence, New York, and Philadelphia, especially Elisha Sigourney, David Anthony and Timothy Green, agreeing to sell oil and candles. Many references to coastal shipping by Nantucket sloops and schooners. Also letters from Silvanus Macy to captains of ships in which the Macy's had an interest and to insurance companies concerning premiums.

Nantucket 29th 4 mo 1795 Esteemed Friend Henry PAYTON This may inform that we Received thine 22nd " and [5 CROSSED OUT] 4 mo [MONTH] with Acct [ACCOUNT] Sales of candles which was Satisfactory the box [WORD OBSCURED BY INK BLOT] wanting I Can only say this that Agreeable to our taking in Act.[ACCOUNT] & my Act [ACCOUNT] of doll [DOLLARS] Agrees with 300 Boxes I have rangd [ARRANGED?] over Matter I find its a Box that Wt [2d O 1/4?] Now after thy talking with Capt [CAPTAIN] Meades I shall leave the Matter as thou may think it most right oyl [OIL] is 100 dol [DOLLARS] p [PER] tun for Cargo thee call in furren [FOREIGN] parts in such that I believe it will not fall if thou inclined for us to send a loade [LOAD] on thy Act. if thou inclined to Ship any flour we have Given Capt [CAPTAIN] Meades order to make room for the same flour at present is 12 Dol. [DOLLARS] I expect it will be higher but one Veysel [VESSEL] arrived with oyl [OIL] but more expected soon, From thy Friends,

We received thy favour 16th. 6mo [6TH MONTH] I was sorry to hear of a loss P [PER] Candles but these things often happens in all Commercial places if ever will untill we are nigher a state of Perfection the Part time I was with you I did not like Solomons Conduct in Every respect, it was only suspicion & so I let it slide; We shall observe that part of thy letter Respecting Oil & Endeavour to Comply to thy Wishes, oil is Rather on the fall; it looks at present likely to be loss ,From thy Friends S & O & M [SILVANUS & OBED MACY] PP we received the Amount of our Ballance rom Capt [CAPTAIN] Meades

Nantucket 17th, 1795 For Stousser & Com. We received your [???] {from?} N. Meader and Observe the contents. Have accordingly purchased ten tons of oil agreeable to invoice and ship in schooner Sherbourne N. Meader Master. I hope it will be to your liking. I have drawn an order on you for the payment. Capt. Meader Agreeable to your advice. Oil has rather {???}. Perhaps it may be lower hereafter; the price agreeable to invoice. - any further command I leave to notice us and we shall gladly serve you. From your friend - S. O. M. Invoice of oil shipped on board Schooner Sherbourne, Nicholas Meader, master by {???} and O. Macy, Account of {Prisque{??} of Henry Stousser & Com., Merchants in Baltimore. Schooner belongs to him: is so pleaseto inform us so that we may settle her acct. which when done we will forward you a copy. From your friend, S. _ O. Macy

Nantucket 15th, 8 mo.,1795 Esteemed friend Joseph Hussey Some time {???} Nathan Parker apply to us for assistanceto purchasethe house that was formerly William Brock. We accordingly applied to Batchelder Hussey who told us he had order to sell it on thy {acct.?} he {???} his price & we agreed to it if we together Batchelder find the timeof payment & accourdingly Nathan Parker moved in the house & have added some repair to it. Now we called on Batchelder for a deed who inform: a deed must come from the {????} we would right{WRITE} to them for one.

Nantucket 23rd 9mo 1795 Henry Stouffer & co. Gentlemem We received your letter [???] respecting the purchase of oyl [OIL]. This may inform before it comes to hand that our schooner was engaged a full [LOAD?] should any other opportunity present this fall we should embrace it & ship the oyl [OYL] to you if our order for time to come comes seasanible [SEASONABLE] we can & shall be ready to company with them that for the time to come. You may if agreeable send general orders or timely orders for a shipment & you will have it regular to your wishes with due payment. We remain your Friend Sylvanus Macy

NB Flour is now 12 if you incline to ship any this fall. We believe it would meet with a ready sale. SJM
