1873 Feby 3rd Davy Hauled 6 [Loards] of wood & stoped & went to Striping Tobacco in O P Barn " " 4th Striping Tobacco Ropers finished in old prize & striped some in new prize Barn, cloudy more more or less did not any Since Soon this morning Weather warmer & more moderate 5 striping Tobacco - in new prize Barn & nearly finished Sams there to day - Weather moderate Mr Mattherly here & nearly finished his work here to day did not quite get done 6 Finished striping my Tobacco in new prize Barn by 12 oclock Barn back of Garden not in order to strip Cold rain nearly all Kate made Brooms &C after 12 oclock to day & at night 7th Rained all night & Wind Blew hard & went in Barn back of Garden took down & went to Striping & took down all mine, - 8th Striping Tobacco in Barn back Garden Davy will [go?] to the Yates Mill & Carry 10 Bus [wheat] wheat to day & bring back Bran & [???????] & nothing [else ???] quit striping Tobacco at Dinner time 1/2 day & it began to Dry, & they quit 9th S S Meeting very cold day & wind Blew hard & cold 10 Weather moderated very much no wind this morning I am going to Richard Whiteheads If nothing Happens to day our folks will cut wood &C 10 Hauling leaves &C &C. Kit began to Plow yesterday & they Hauled Some leaves & wood yesterday weather moderate 11. Plowed Some Davy Hauling leaves wood Kit Plowing lot Mary cleaning Milton & Sarah Hauling leaves in Stables &C - 12th Raining all the blessed night & Raining yet this morning weather moderate we have One young lamb some week ago the water over the bridge to corn House & I cant cross to feed my Hogs Striping Tobacco in Barn back of Garden Sams [p?] but did not finish it quite rained more less all day long to night its not raining but cloudy.

1873 Feby 13th Sent Davy to Millers Mill with Corn for me Kit Mary & for Davy Himself Meal [Balance] striping Tobacco again to [Sams] in Barn back of [Garden] & will finish all of Sams to day cloudy & cool Finished Sams & Striped on mine in bulk from 1 oclock till night Davy got back & brot all the meal, Snowed off & on most all day Still Cloudy & likely for falling weather 14th Striped Tobacco to [&] day & finished & finished about 1/2 after 3 oclock or nearly 4 oclock it might have [b???] & they all went to cutting & Halling wood, still Cloudy & cool weather but it did not rain or Snow to day 15 Saturday Rained & Snowed & Hailed Some, we plowed some in my Lot cut & Hauled wood nearly all day 16 Rained yesterday evening & the blessed night & still raining this morning all water courses High. My wheat I last sewed coming up very well the weather not very cold this week it has been raining most all the week & nearly for 2 weeks in fact it has been a very wet winter 17 Rained all day yesterday & this morning clear & weather moderate Kit Davy Sarah & Milton gone down to Mr [?] Hubbards to strip their Tobacco Kits crop land Kit coming back by 12 oclock he said. Edmond come here this morning to cut ditch in new ground. 3 feet by 2 or 2 1/2 feet Deep _ 18 Kit & Mary Halling up my Blade fodder [out] of field, Hauled 2 Loads to day & Put in [?????] I went down to Yates Mill to See about my flour, Mr Yates has Sold another Barrel of [the] best to Doct Estes & they got it this day [this] day moderate pretty day _. 19th clear last night & behold this morning day [Thunder] =ed & when I got up it was raining till after [sun] rise, still cloudy & like for rain Hauled up all my Blade fodder & 3 stacks Do Bot of Sam in fresh field making 7 & put them separate in Granary [loffs], mine far Side from Granary Door & Sams he Saved next to [Bars] & [M????] at the end & we have 2 more in my [fresh] ground, & 2 more in upper fresh ground Saved by Sam making 4 out, now

1873 Feby 19th Edmond Ditching my new ground he has been 3 days to day & Sam has Son with him yesterday & to day making 2 for Sam & finished this evening -- 20th Sent my waggon to Yates Mill 12 Bus wheat for flour to be Bbl up & sold making 16 Bus for the last 3 Bbls to be made Kit Hauled leaves on my stables after he came home from Mill & Hauled leaves on Tobacco Lot till night & it began to Rained the Blessed night, & cloudy this 21st day of Feby 1873 Kits hands all but himself has been gone to Mr Hubbards all this week striping Tobacco &C still like for Rain cleared off windy & moderate [Kit] Hauling Rails around Corn field fence next to orchard 22 Kit Hauling wood & rails to day & Had it to cut all his hands left here last Monday morning the 17th to strip Tobacco & Kit too Stayed till night Monday night Davy Miller & Milton come back Saturday about 12 oclock Sarah did not come at all Saturday I Charged her for the Saturday work 40 [cts] 23rd Turned very cold & windy 24th This morning Tremendous cold & windy Thermometer down to 11 & has been cold the Blessed day, clear day & very cold Delivered Kit & his hands Bacon for Striping Tobacco for me agreeable to statement 25 Cut & Halled wood & Garden Post all day 26 Cut wood for Plant Bed cloudy all day & about night began to Snow Hail & Rain weather not very cold My Cattle all except milk cows in Stack field next to Martins [except milk] (except milk on this line is deleted) Sent to help Edmond roll his Logs this week 27 Cutting down Pines for Barn & cold wood up next to fresh field & will cut Logs to day for a Barn next to orchard out of old field Pines. _ [28] Kit & Davy gone to Mr Templetons new ground to Saw of 2 stocks 10 feet long for weather Boarding --

1873 Feby 28 Cut down old field toward fresh [field] for Logs & coal to day we are cutting Logs [t????] Poles Ribs &C &C out next to old orchard for [Barn] to be built this year If we have good Luck the weather is very cold & wind Blows - [??????] March 1st Beautiful morning clear pretty day & we are cutting Logs in Pines next to Mr Lewis's for a [Barn] to day & Davy gone to Mr Templetons to roll Logs clear night Stars shining tolerable cold & behold [???] 2nd day of March Sunday morning Snowing & Keeps [on] nearly all day wind has ceased not very cold I [went] down to Mr Yates yesterday he fixed my Big Gun & they have nearly finished grinding my wheat Doct [Estes] has bot 2 Bbls flour paid for 1 & spoke for [another] Sold one good Bbl to John Templeton & got the money for it yesterday all the snow nearly gone this 3rd March 1873 & quite windy & cold. Kit & his hands cutting Logs for Barn this morning & finishing Snowing again this morning making 12 or 15 Snows this winter 4th Finished cutting Logs for Barn yesterday very windy & cold all Day & last night wind blows yet from N W & the thermometer [thermometer] this morning is down to 11 Degrees about Sun rise Sun 1 Hour high 15 Degrees. Wind very high from N W ground as hard as a Rock began to Burn Plant Bed next to Neals Clear fair weather at this morning. 5th Still Burning plant Bed above the one next Martha Neals, & thank the Lord no wind this day & not so cold as yesterday 16 Degrees Soon this [????] [Star] the young Cow we milk & the Bull 6 Finished Burning Plant Bed yesterday & to day fixing sewing it & fencing it shelling corn Hauling up Oats this evening clear pretty day tho the [ground] dont thaw much, Seed Tobacco from old place last fall Did not finish plant Bed till about night 7 Halling up Oats to get out to Sew, Hauled wood cutting wood sent Davy to Yates Mill carried 4 1/2

Bushels corn to mill for meal got the meal & Brot One Bbl flour & some in Bag. 2 Bags Bran Sold Doct Estes 2 Bbls fine flour not paid for one at the Mill to Sell for me, fine day this. Doct [8th] Mar Estes paid me for another fine flour, & another at the Mill not pd for he bot but not Delvd tho may be deliveed now sold Bro Reeves One Barrel flour & all I have got now to Sell for $7.00 to be as he can collect the money at S Stone Church, I went to Meeting Jerry & Mr Moses came here Saturday 9th Nannie & myself went to Meeting Sunday pretty Weather at this time -- 10 Plowing for Oats Kit sewed clover seed in Lot by old prize Barn Plowing for Oats above Carriage House, Davy & Milton Hauling leaves on Lot to day. &C. weather moderate 11th Raining this morning not much getting out oats this morning, to Sew,. my Hogs did not come up Sewed Clover Seed in Lot Back of old prize Barn & Oats & clover Seed above Carriage House got from from Mr Moses [2] Bushels -- Plowing & sewing oats in Lot above Garden did not Rain long this morning Davy & Milton Hauling leaves on Lot 12 Davy Milton & Patty Hauling leaves Kit Sarah & Mary Plowing for oats fine day Plowing up Irish Potatoe Patch 13th Gone to Corn field Sewing Oats this morning David Patty & Milton Hauling Leaves on Lot - fine day. I went to Mount Airy to get nails My Hogs up this morning - Mr M. at work On Garden yesterday & to day 14th Killed my Boar, & salted up to eat, because he would eat off his head in the pen, Davy Hauling leaves Milton & Patty [raking]. Kit & Sarah Sewing oats on mountain to day, My wife gone to R Whiteheads to See Sallie who is sick -- This day at 12 oclock when Kit Mary & Sarah went to Sewing Oats on the mountain they Caught Edmd Tuckers Son Edmond & Martin Smiths Son Tom in my
