1872 April 14th Rained soon in morning cleared off Kate come down here Saturday evening Stayed till this evening still cloudy

15. Raining this morning, I went Strait Stone Saturday & Sunday about Sundy School. Elected Mr Tyree as Pastor if he accepts;

16 Rained Raked & Piled up manure & Plowed Some halled up stack Oats

17 I went to CH delivered delivered to Mr R Carter the acct Current of Mr Hunts Estate to Report it to Court & left my Book with Mr Carter for him to See, Report Clerk of Circuit Court appraisment of Estate Sale Book & all the Papers I had to report Our folks Plowing for corn & shrubbing on Branch for Tobacco, etc etc

18th. Raining this morning & last night & this evening & to night, Thundered & lightened, we striped Tobacco till 12 Oclock & then we went to Plowing on Branch in John's field for Tobacco ground now very wet, & still Raining, Mattherly to day Nearly ½ the day at work on Shed

19th Striping Tobacco till 12 oclock then went to fencing on the mountain mattherly here Ben went to Mill I sent Some & Sam Gilbert

20 Tom gone to Thomas Owens to Roll Logs " Sam began to Plant corn to day at Mountain

22st I am helping Sam Plant corn & hes to help me I went to Sunday School yesterday organized & started to teaching Mattherly here to day

-23rd Planting corn for me & Sam Martin Coltering for me on Branch the 24th April

24 Planting corn for me in fresh ground I went to Court House last Tuesday to get my Book 25 etc etc Planting corn in fresh field, fine weather

26th Finished planting corn in fresh field Soon this morning Planted Snaps & corn by Granary & Black Smiths Shop this morning listing Sams planting that now Ben droping Andrew & Lewis

coltering with Hoes Mr Mattherly here finished Halling manure out of my Stable in Garden Halled up Stack Oats yesterday after he finished Shed at Granary this morning Halled up Stack fodder & 2 Loads leaves for my Stable & Mules, he is coltering On ranch for Tobacco for me --

27th Listing & planting corn in ps fresh ground above Granary shall check the lower part of min, Planting Sams now. Andrew went off this morning for nothing before breakfast Mr Mattherly coltering on Branch for Tobacco till 12 oclock, then he will work till night for going to Mill for him once

28th I went to Sunday School to day - few scholars

29th. A little cloudy this morning Planting corn in fresh ground above House trying to finish that to day by 12 oclock to day finished by 12 oclock except some flats Coltering in new or fresh ground & Andrew Starting Put waggon wheels in Branch Planted Snaps in Corn field to day Mr Mattherly made & put up Martin Box to day --

30 Loading waggon & started to Lynchg Tuesday with Lugs & second rate

May st 1 gone to Lynchg Rained very hard they are Hilling & fencing while we are gone & Plowing

3rd We got back from Lynchg Friday

4th Plowing in fresh ground for Tobacco & on Branch. Ben has gone to Mill for Sam Martin & Mr Matthingly to Millers quite cool for may

5 Went to Sunday School cool weather

6 Mattherly Set in here for 1 month @ $9 pr month he work on Sam Gilberts Plow Hoe Eye put up Vice in shop Tommy Plowed Potatoes Irish Plowed out nannies Patch & Plowed up Garden Planted Corn & Snaps & Greens in Garden & then went to Hilling in fresh ground Sam Gilbert fixing corn ground in fresh field --

1872 May 7th. Saml Gilbert finished planting corn & then coltering in new ground, or fresh ground Mr Mattherly Ben & Lewis & Andrew planted Some corn for Sam & some for me in Granary Lot Tommy coltering for corn & Tobacco this morning till 12 oclock went to corn field & listed a little till night

8th Sam Roper or Gilbert coltering Ben & Lewis Hilling Andrew Hilling Mr Mattherly gone about 2½ or 3 hours this morning Halling out Stock out of new or fresh ground Ben & Mr Mattherly Started to Halling out manure about 9 oclock clear pretty day Tommy fixing our Corn Land in Bottoms in field, & Pea Patch Finished corn & Planted some Peas Pumpkins Potatoes & Stewing over on Bottoms, Planted Some water mellons in Garden & simblings fine Warm weather 3 or four Sows got Pigs only one comes up Sow comes but Pigs dont come only 6

9th Halling out manure waggon & Cart to day

10th Waggon finished Halling out manure this evening let Mr Mattherly have cart & steers to carry his Father home gone all day & him too Andrew & Lewis Hilling in fresh ground - Tommy & Ben Halled rails out of new [g]round corn field from Bars to Gap up the Branch manured our Plants a day or Two ago clear warm weather at this time

11th I went to meeting S. S no Preacher carried my waggon to Mr Yates to fix coltering in fresh ground & laying off coltering on Branch for Tobacco weather moderate very dry weather

12th Going on to Sunday School this morning

13 Coltering fresh ground to Hill, Mr Mattherly & Andrew shrubing & digging up rushes till 12 Oclock & cleaning out water Gates etc etc, Tommy & Sam Plowing on Branch after 12 oclock Sam finished Plowing & laying off fresh ground,

14th Mr Mattherly not here to day. Plowing on Branch for Tobacco till 12 oclock then Halling rails tillnight

1872 May 15th Rolling Logs to day Tommy & Sam Halling Rails out of new ground this evening cloudy this morning - I went to Richard [Whitehead] yesterday & come back &C. Thundered in evening & Rained

16th Rack some last night but did not Get done Jacob come & Brot One hand Edmond sent his 2 Boys Martin Come & helped us Roll Logs Cloudy this day we planted some Cabbage Plants Tomatoes & Beets out & began in fresh ground above Granary to replanted corn fixed Sweet Potatoe Patch to Hill & Plant - 1872

17th Plowing Corn above Granary Sam Plowing his fresh ground corn, all replanting corn to day expect to Send Tom to Mr Yates after my waggon & body to Iron, Raining this evening

18th Took down all our Tobacco last night in the night, Raining Cold rain this morning

19th. I went to Sunday School few teachers this day

20. drawing Tobacco Plants & planted in fresh ground 4 or 5000 trees in fresh ground Tommy not here planted Tobacco till 12 oclock Mattherly 21 got Molly & went home to plow for himself

22nd Scattered manure in Lot & Plowed in before night Ben & Lewis hauled out Tobacco Stacks before they Plowed the Lot & Ben plowed with Steers Mr Mattherly Plowed nannies patch Tommy Hilling up Early Rose Irish Potatoes sent to Jacobs after collard plants for myself & Sam & planted them I lacked a little of getting done greens, & Sweet Potatoe Patch finished over one Mr Mattherly Plowed Irish Potatoes done here, by Hen House.

23rd Replanted corn till 12 oclock then yesterdayHilling - & coltering fresh ground Sam nearly done Hilling fresh ground pretty morning I Carried my wife to Mr Whiteheads to day she will Stay till Saturday, this is election day - Mr Mattherly not here this morning -

24 Mr Mattherly & Jane Smith here hilling.

1872 May 24th Ben went up to Jacob Graves after my drag, & dragging Tobacco Land on Branch Tommy & Sam fixing flat Land for Tobacco Planted Part of Pea Patch this morning nearly finished hilling fresh ground Hyram Wyatt Hilled 2 days in fresh ground rained a little to night after Supper quite warm growing weather

25 drawing Tobacco & Planting fresh ground I went to meet my wife & so unlikely & rained a little Sometimes that she did not meet me I went to Coleman Adkersons the other Side of Reed Creek & turned back for home but little rain, Still cloudy & Like for rain yet, they will I expect finish planting fresh ground Tobacco this evening

27 One of my calves got Hung in a Stump & Dyed in lot by corn house Hilling on Branch Bedding & dragging Some, cool yet I went Mount Airy

28th. Hilling & Beding on Branch Cool & windy Manure Plant Beds to day --

29th. Finished Beding On Branch for Tobacco yesterday & all hands hilling, Jane here this morning Hilling lent Martin Turning Plow Brot back drawing Tobacco Plants & will plant this evening Mr Pringle here yesterday made me 2 Bee Gums pd him 75 cents for them

30 Planted about ½ of our Branch Tobacco laying off & Beding Lot our Lot for Tobacco Mr Mattherly put on Whan Fertilizer & Peruvian Guano this morning Jane here yesterday & will be to day. Cool this morning, putting whann Guano on in drills for Tobacco & put one row of Peruvean in it & stuck up Sticks in it to see which produces the best. 120 lbs Guano the other Side drain 60 " this - Side next to Barn Guano Put on Tobacco Lot whans Fertilizer 170 lbs Peruvean 3 Rows both sides of drain in Lot Sticks in to try weighing 12 lbs Put in drills the other Side & this Side nearly to apple Tree 5 Rows left & nothing in them at all
