1872 23 Augt 23rd sent Ben to Mill 6 Bushels wheat for us 1 1/2 Bushels for Sam, morning Toping & succoring Tobacco in fresh ground --- Mose went away from here to night. 24 morning Succoring & Topping & finished fresh ground last evening & went to Lot & finish that I fed Lam & Ben went to Yates Mill & carried a good Hart Log making 2 [thats] there 1 for Square edge Plank then other for rafters 3 by 4 Inches Brot Home the flour 238 [lbs] & Bran & Sams [Ropers] 25 I went to Sunday School fine growing weather 26 Mose come this morning & gone to work worming succoring & Toping On Branch, to day clear morning Mr Mattherley Brot my Machine home Saturday night from [Jessee] Killeys only 1 Tine broke & 1 Screw Since they Started has broke, since the machine started the 10th July last - 27th Worming & succoring Tobacco this morning my hand saw has gone strangely I thought I lent it to Mr Mattherly & he Says he Brot it back before he went off with the machine [Sey] Marshall hire at work 28th Mose left or I dismissed him as he was not much [out] in plantation Plowing lot Tobacco next to old prize Barn & Hilling up & there came up a little cloud to look at & I thought it would rain a shower but such a rain I never see fall & washed my [fence] away in few places thro my field & was over all the flats of Tobacco on Branch & wash it down & then the most thunder & lightening that I ever Saw & my House leaked very much 29th Yesterday fixing fences on Branch & Bridges all day Sey helped --- worming succoring Toping &C to day Sey here yet cloudy & like for Rain not quite So Hot 30th Worming & succoring Tobacco on Branch [S?????] & worked till friday night 4 days. 31st Worming & Succoring Tobacco to day in fresh ground fair day -

1872 Sept 1st Sun day Tolerably cool this morning Finished worming & succoring fresh ground yesterday clear cool morning I am going to Sunday School My Crippled sheep gone Died first of this week have got but 5 sheep now 2nd Sept 1872 Beautiful weather for saving fodder Pulling fodder all about House & in fresh ground to day Martin Smith Sam Tucker & Sey Marshall & Edmond Tucker pulling @ 9 Oclock this morning Remarkable to Say Rain or Shine Hail Snow or Sun Shine Mrs Wyatt nor Andrew has Stayed at any Sunday all day this year nor Tom Talbot before he left 3- Martin Sey Marshall & Andrew Wyatt pulling fodder from Top to bottom in Big or fresh field to day after the morning worming & succoring Tobacco in Lot 4 Worming & succoring our Tobacco in Lot Sam Roper & his gang pulling fodder on Mountain 5 Ben went to Mill after Tying up fodder me & Sam nearly all day Martin helped us put up 1 Stack Blades [tyed] up all we had down Rained but little this evening. I have been Sick 2 or 3 days myself 6 Worming & succoring Tobacco on Branch & finished & then Started in fresh ground & worked in fodder __ 7 Worming & succoring Tobacco fresh ground [?????] gone fair weather, I am too unwell to go meeting 8 Mr Moses & Bro Reeves came here last night I am Still sick tho a little Better. 9th. Not a hand did not come to help me pull fodder Andrew wormed & succoring Tobacco in fresh ground & finished Doct [Simon] came here to see me I am not well yet 10th Sam Tucker Martin & Francis Lain here [working] some Tobacco in Lot then went to cutting tops in fresh ground did not get done before it rained & after it rained went to worming Tobacco in Lot. Keeps raining a little Sam pulled Some fodder tyed up some & wormed & succored Some we are doing but little of any thing.

1872 Sept 11th Martin Smith & Frances Lain worming & succoring Tobacco this morning Finished cutting Tops & setting up above Granary & Pulled Some fodder in Big field Raining now this morning working in Tobacco [12th] Mr Mattherly in plantation & Andrew worming & succoring Tobacco on Branch cloudy & like for rain Hyram Wyatt in Tobacco from 9 oclock when not raining Finished on Branch & it rained all the evening nearly 13th Mr Mattherly in plantation to day Hyram Wyatt here at [9 ???day] Thomas Laine Come to work 14 Thomas Lain pulling fodder Jorden Graves pulling fodder Sam Mattherly pulling Do Martha Neal [Adrew] & Hyram Wyatt pulling fodder tolerable good day wrote to the clerk of Louisa County Court [??] 15th I went to Sunday School 16 Tolerably cool & clear Jerry here yesterday Mr Matthiery Come to work in plantation pulling fodder Thomas Lain here this morning & [Franny] Lain Hiram Wyatt pulling fodder & Miss M Neal 17th Cutting Tops stacking Blades & tying up &C Tom Lain Mr Mattherly Fanny Lain & Andrew & Hyram Wyatt turned little warmer to day 18th Tom Lain Franny Lain Hiram Wyatt Nannie gone to Sallies ]Jeres] &C. by Marshall & Jerry Marshall & Mr Mattherly here to day finishing fodder this morning Stacking 19th Tom Lain Cy Marshall & Bro Jerry Fannie Lain Hiram Wyatt Wm [Bailess] cloudy this morning but Cleared after the morning 20 Tom Lain Mattherly [Cyris] Marshall & Bro Jere Hyram Wyatt & Wm Bailess, nearly filled old prize Barn Sam has Tom Lain Says 421 sticks on there & I have [Sticks] next to Mr Lewis, Sams 2 Rooms next to Bars I have 3 Rooms & Sam has 2 Rooms Clear pretty morning Mrs Estes [Mrs] Yates & Sallee Templeton all came here & went home again as my wife was not here My wife left home Thursday

1872 Sept 21st Cut & Hung all the fresh ground that was Ripe & I had 2 rooms next to Richards place & Sam had 2 full next to my House Middle room got none, Will Cut & fill that room, Sam may Cut & put all his remnant but the Lot in the Top of the new prize Barn the [Jo????] & below & next to ground is more We have put up the past week 9 Stacks blade fodder & 1 shock & fill nearly 2 Houses Tobacco 22nd Sunday Meeting & School at S. Stone 23rd Sept Samuel Mattherly gone to MIllers Mill for himself & Carried Log for me & 1 Bushel Corn, Log for Rafters for Porch Carried 3 Bushels wheat in part of his part for thrashing -- Came back home while his wheat was grinding & Carried another Log to pay for Sawing them 1 [?] he Carried, one is for me & one for Sawing -- the Boys done but little worming & succoring Tobacco on branch yet. Billey Bailess here 9 [?] day [minding Gap whil] Sam Halling wood to Barns 24 Worming & succoring over Tobacco Billy here gathering snap Beans dryed Turned my 5 young cattle Dolly Betty Ben Lindy & Rose in lower field [?] this morning Mr Mattherly [get] my waggon & mules gone to Jacobs & they are going after toll wheat up about Glenns &C, to day _ got all the toll Wheat up above wards Road except Saml Smiths at Mr James Pannells plantation Mr [L????] & Banks's - 25 Cutting all my Tobacco & Sams except that in the Lot Halled it all up but did not get done hanging Mr Mattherly [helped] us this day Rained in night & evening 26 Fair Beautiful morning Hanging & raising Tobacco soon this morning. Rained tonight 27 Mr Mattherly & Wm Bailess here Billy Wm & succoring Do at work on cooking Room

1872 Sept 28th Mr Mattherly [???????] Peggy here to day & Wm Bailess worming & succoring --- 29th Rained last night finished [fer??ng] new prize Barn Jorden at working on cooking room with Mr M Peggy worming & succoring Lot Rained last night cloudy & Raining this morning 30th Mattherly & Sam working on Cooking House Ben & me went after waggon at Bookers Carried chickens to Thomas Creaseys got Bill & Mules shod at Primas Shop Beach tree, & got home about night quite cool Oct 1st Mr Mattherly came here this morning Complaining Hard till 12 Oclock got So bad with Sore throat & went home Sam Continued this day getting Boards for Kitchen Ben went to Millers Mill Carried 3 1/2 Bus Corn for Our Meal & I lent 2 Bus Corn to Sam & Carries that & got 26 [lbs] Seed Cotton picked there to day, Lewis & Andrew getting apples & Cutting down corn &C 2nd Cutting Lot Tobacco & finished little before night Hired Edmond Tucker & son Saml Edmd cut Sam Piled & Martin Smith cut from 10 oclock till near night when we finished 3 Sam Roper helped Mattherly went to get Board & stoped [Suk] Thomas Lain Come to cut Hay & Stayed till all day cutting Hay 4 Tom Lain cutting Hay this morning Helped Mr Mattherly put up rafters on Cooking room & Helped Hang Tobacco the other Side Drain in Lot & Round it in Barn Mr M Helped 5 Cloudy this morning Lowry Come made a bargain with from next Monday morning for Month to sew my wheat & Get up my corn Mr Mattherly going to Mill Millers for himself carries a Log for Me & Coming back at 12 oclock & carried another for weather boarding Kitchen & got back in the night, cleared off to day
