1874 Sept 15 Fanned out Golden Chaff Wheat to Sew Fanned it out only once & put in Hhd & Box - Gathering Peas to day Raining again - sent Bacon Meal whiskey Bbl & Nails up to John Lains KilPatrick going to Dig Well up there 5 feet water for $15- & I fine 3 hands Diging the well 16th Rained tremendous hard rain last night about 11 oclo ck washed away both of my Bridges here at the house took us till 10 oclock to fix them Sent Jimmie to Millers Mill after flour Bran [Grudgens] & Martins & Eds flour &C Ed Martin & Nannie gone to See Wm Forests wife buried this evening. Wrote to Capt Wm M Fredway attorney at [Pallsy CH] about Barns Debt in Mulenburg David Waller in Halifax Banks & Lovelaus Philip Thornton & others Debts neglected I think & to Mrs E Coleman about Bricks for S S M House, cloudy at night 17th Raining this morning a little Worming succoring and Toping Tobacco this morning Nannie did not come back till in night 18th Pulling fodder to day sent Jimmie with cart Plank & nails to fix [well] on Strait Stone Creek Sam come down this morning & went back with Jimmie. Clear & pretty Morning --\ 19th Tying up & taking care of fodder cloudy Jimmie took my cart & steers & Hauled Rock at Strait Stone Plantation yesterday 20 Raining last evening & this morning rained & cloudy till aboput 10 oclock so that we neither went to meeting or Sunday school lent my mules to Mrs Templeton & Daughter to go St Andrews to Mr & Mrs Shields funeral to day cleared off in evening our fodder not injured much I dont think [yet] Pulled fodder yesterday blow the House on ground Jere & Richard came here this evening. - 21st Pulling fodder tying up & Pulling up stacks wormed & succored some Tobacco this morning

22nd Sept 1874 Pulling fodder stacking 23 Same work & [culling] Tobacco here before dining room yesterday 110 [Sticks] Hung it Housed it this evening, carried Logs out of road the other side Templetons Nannie helping pull fodder to day Brot home for Mr Whitehead 1 Bbl flour [lit] Charles Miller & [Winston], have by Degrees when culling [for him] at Templetons 4 Bus Bran & 100 [lbs] flour in Bag & corn out of his Whitehead wheat & left 1 Bbl flour at mill for Mr Creasey to Sell for Mr Whitehead -- fine weather for fodder 24 Pulling Tying & stacking fodder Nanny helped 1/2 day yesterday the plantation I carried my wife to [Sallies] to go to Lynchg to day to Show & see her Sister 25th Nannie D. Whitehead here with me Pulling fodder & stacking, fine weather to [save] fodder 26th [Saving] fodder cutting some Tobacco finished pulling fodder at home yesterday, fine weather to [save] fodder Tying up fodder on Branch this evening put up 8 Stacks fodder to this day Nannie Pulled up Grass in Cotton Patch this morning in [C?] 27 I went to Sunday School Carry Nannie with me but few there 28 Raining this morning cannot go after my wife who I reckon is at Mr [Joseph] M. Moses to see [Kate] our folks raising Tobacco & [firing] this morning A little fodder on the ground about 4 Stacks shocked in the field quite moderate weather 28 Raining this morning & Rained all the blessed day put fire under about [300] Sticks Tobacco Edmd shelled some corn Martin went home at 12 oclock & has not been back [???] about 1/2 Stack fodder on ground now 29 Still raining & rained all night & Wind blew very hard so that I cannot go after my wife. Only 2 of my hogs up this morning continued to rain cleared of very pretty

1874 Sept 30 Went after Nannie & Brot her Home our folks firing Tobacco & worming & succoring above Granary put up one Stack last - Oct 1st Worming & succoring Tobacco Stacking fodder " Coleman here cutting Grass this morning clear " 2nd Worming & succouring Tobacco Stacking fodder &C & will finish the fodder business this evening Clear pretty day gathering Snaps [beans] &C we have put up 10 or 11 Stalks now. 3rd Worming & succoring Tobacco in Lot by new Barn & at [bee] House firing Tobacco nearly done [Stakg] fodder now for this year pretty weather for every thing began to Cut Tobacco to day about 11 oclock 4 I am going to Sunday School to day 5 Worming & Succoring Tobacco this evening & will Cut Some Tobacco this evening Shelled corn Bro Booker came here this evening stayed all night 6th Sent to mill Millers 2 1/2 Bus corn for Self 2 Bus for Ed lent Martin Smith 1 1/2 Bushels corn for meal Cutting Tobacco to Day Bro Booker left this morning cloudy & cool this morning put up Pigs to divide Divided the Pigs about night Mrs Wyatt got 2 & I got 2 & the other one she said I might have that one for 75 [cts] or she would give that I told her I would not more than [3/g] for my half of it & she Said I might take it but she was of opinion the Shoat were worth $2 - but I did not think so 7th Cutt Some Tobacco to day wormed & succored some I raised in Barn new prize marked my Pigs & put them near House Turn out 1 Boar & 1 Sow & bought Mrs Wyatts 1/2 of 1 other 8 Stringing leaves firing Tobacco one of my Hogs been missing 3 morning Raining this morning 9 All of my Hogs up We are worming & succoring Tobacco & firing Tobacco -- 10 I went to meeting Halling wood worming Tobacco Mot & children came here friday evening & Staid home Saturday evening. Mot & Kate & Mr Moses meeting this day, Elected Mr Booker as Pastor of Strait Strait Stone for 1875 the year [13th] Went to S.S. Meeting. Clear weather

1874 Monday 12th Firing Tobacco in new prize Barn this morning Our folks are pulling fodder this morning at the mountain [last] planting. clear pretty morning 13th Cutting Tobacco & Piling all day & left some last Planting which got little frost bit 14th Smart frost this morning & every thing Bitten by the frost. clear day cutting down corn & Piling & finished the Tobacco [75] 15 Nannie & me went to Jacobs to day our folks Hauling up Corn shucked out Some & put in corn House, smart frost this morning. 16th Hauling up Tobacco Hanging & puting in house this morning none but 3 of my hogs up this morning I have bot of Martin 400 [lbs] good Blade fodder & paid [?Lain] 2.60 for it 17th Hauling up & hanging Tobacco I went to Grange meeting S S M H 18th Sunday clear morning [same work at new prize Barn] This line stricken out Have not finished Hanging Tobacco yet 19th John W Lain has gone up to Whiteheads & Hunts after 3 Bags Empire Guano to Sew Wheat carried to Mr Whitehead 6 1/2 [lbs] Butter 1/2 for Sallie 1/2 for us to be paid for [???] pr [lb] also carried up to Lains this morning for him to carry up there 100 [lbs] flour & 3 Bushels Bran from wheat Sent Jimmy up to Lains this morning with Bran & flour he got for Rent from Templetons 1 Barrel flour here I sold to Charles & Winston for culling at Templetons & Mr Creasey & Bro. has 1 Bbl flour to Sell for White head or has Sold it. clear pretty day or morning 20 Sent Mr Jno W. Lain to [Staunton] Road yesterday after 3 Bags Empire Guano & did not get a pound. Mr Whitehead wrote he was looking for it every day & if come this week he would send it to me if he did not send this week I'll have to go & see him again. 21st Went to Mr Wm W Moses to carry [note for bats] Our folks pulling off corn shucking & culling down corn to sew [what] firing Tobacco

1874 Oct 22nd Began to cut & stack corn to Sew Sew Wheat Nannie Dews helping fine [warm] day This is 3 days [Lowry] has been coltering new ground, & we are [firing] Tobacco also 23rd Whitehead & Hunt Sent me 3 Bags Empire Which Weighed 600. 1 Bag let JW Lain have at Strait Stone Creek Plantation for that place 24 Cutting down & Piling corn 25 Cloudy & Rained a little last night 26 Sewing & Plowing in wheat 3 Bus seeded 1st piece above Granary. Cutting down & Piling corn Beautifull morning. 27 Cutting down Corn to Sew wheat Lowry here & Carried Log to Millers Mill another Big one 28th Carried 1 Long Log & 1 long as a rail to day Bro Eds & Martins Meal Home cutting & piling corn to Sew wheat to day 29th Hauling & shucking corn from Mountain Spring to day 30 Finished shucking corn from Mountain Measured it put it away to feed on & went to Sewing wheat over the road next to Temple Nannie & me went to Meeting at St. Andrews, Nov 1st 1874 Nannie & me went to St Andrews - 2 Killed little Beef to day let Ed have 1 [???? g???????] - & Mr H Templeton 1 hind quarter cut & Hauled wood this evening still cool & frosty. Sent Jimmie there 1 with 1 1/2 Bushels wheat & he brot my flour Home left the shorts & Bran there & they said I had no other bag there but the one he brot was not mine both of mine missing 3 cutting down & Piling corn & sewing wheat [?]4 cutting down & Piling corn & sewing wheat I went to Millers Mill after my Bran & my 2 Bags [misplaced] 5. Cutting down & Piling corn & finishing ground & went to Pulling corn below House fine weather Ed & Jimmy went to Mr Lewis to help Allen shuck corn I went to Mr Pews to get me a pr Shoes made 6 Plowing & sewing wheat in fresh ground Martin & Nannie Hauling up corn below house & then Martin will help Mr Templeton Shuck corn Nannie will make slop for hogs &C &C
