1873 Augt 15 Mary Washing till 2 Oclock Sarah Milton & Geo all day digging Irish Potatoes got Near 20 Bushels I reckon with 3 Rows to dig clear dry weather, Mr John Dudly here yesterday

16th Hilling up my Tobacco on Branch Tobacco to day clear Hot day Dug first Planting Irish Potatoes yesterday few more to dig when we get ready

17 I went to Sunday School got home 2 oclock Rained in eveing fine Rain

18 I went to Court in 2 Showers as I went up done but little business

19 Come home from Court by Lovelaces Our folks working in Tobacco 18 & 19 & Hauling logs for Hog Pen - I was in rain Coming home.

20 Raining this morning Cutting Coal wood going to Send Kit at Mr Figgins to see about maching[machining] etc - rained nearly all day this day here Plowed up road

21st Rained hard this morning Kit making Rakes lent Mr Mattherly Molley this morning to Creaseys Hill Grove doing but little 22 Mr Mattherly agreed to do any thing I want him a day for my Mule & Keeping up Tom while Molley is gone Rained more or less till late in evening when it was not raining they fixed rakes Covered old Hen House fixed up Bars & Fence road etc

22nd. Kit & Milton gone to work on road to day Mary washing etc Sarah worming & succoring Tobacco Cloudy & like for rain warm weather

23rd. Worked on road Kit & Milton Sarah & Mary Worming & Succoring Tobacco, I went to Mr Moses My maching[machine] is broke at Mr Figgins

24th. I went to meeting & Sunday School to day

25. Will try & Sew turnip Patch this morning looking for machine this morning Toping & worming Tobacco to day

1873 August 26th Worming Toping & Succorring Tobacco Nearly all day, James Shields barn over at Martha Neals to day -- fine weather

27th. Fixing to Halingl Logs for Barn this morning raining this morning Pride Hunt here this morning -- Mr Mattherly gone to Lynchg with Mr Wm Power to get Machine Spindle fixed Started about 11 Oclock to day

28 Raining nearly all this day Kit put in Gates Post on Hills & fixed it, fixed up Bars at Granary made 1 new one etc.

29th. Rained all night & raining this morning Will Skin & trim Barn Logs to & Cut 2 Stacks to Yates Mill Shortly cloudy all day

30th. Cloudy this morning & foggy fixing to work on our road toward Strait Stone & thro Richards field toward Mount Airy went to Mrs Mary B Pannills & got her Papers to get her Pension If I can I shall carry them to Capt Wm M Tredway before long to see the Papers & get it If he Can finished roads little after 12 oclock Mr Templeton & Ed Bailess help us, Bank come again to day & no Lovelace, faired off this day. very warm yet, -

31 Went to Sunday School Wm L Powers & S. Mattherly did not get bacck from Lynchg till this evening with machine wheel they had a bad time of it Spindle cost $4, Mattherly spent $1 after $5 I lethim have Mr Power Charged $2. 90/100 for the Carriage to Lynchg & back

Sept 1st We were Knocking about most of this day & did not begin to thrash till about 2 hours by Sun fixing down machine etc, Thrashed about 2 Hours last evening

2nd thrashing this morning got Edmond Tucker Robt Martin Smith & Wife Ham Wy & Ed Bailess from Templetons Mattherly is

1873 Sept 2nd Finished thrashing wheat to day at 12 Oclock I fed Edmond Martin Smith Mattherly Ed Bailess Hiram Wyatt Jane Smiths & Robt Tucker, Robt & Martin Smith here nearly 1 day a ps. Now Loading Cart & Waggon with Machine to Carry at to Mr Wm Moses's he Will thrash his himself take Care of the Machine till next Summer, Hammer [unclear] etc etc pretty weather --

3rd I went to Mr Moses yesterday he is to take of the machine thrash his Own wheat at Johns & on the River & give me half the toll machine gone to Mr Moses My Cart & wagon I Start to Mr Bankss Lovelace's & the CH about Mr Hunts Estate Collected the money paid Banks for Barthdale for Securing & saving Lewis s Debit.

4 Delivered my Acct to & stayed with G D Neal Commr all day doing but little he got the Amt of 1 Legatee Due & there I left Due each Legatee agreeable to Mr G. D Neal Statement $67.04 & he is to have the amount ready the day after next court. Geo E Coleman not at home. Paid Banks the Contract between Me & Barksdale to Save & Secure Lewis s Debt which is now paid, $300 -

5th I come home last night Our folks every one went off to a burying to day at Joel Hubbards pretty day cloud passed round in evening My old Sow & 7 Pigs not up this morning

6th I dont Know what folks are doing worming & Succoring Tobacco I reckon part of the evening nothing

7th Cloudy & like for rain I went to Sunday School

8 Raining a little this morning quite warm I reckon they are worming Tobacco this morning My old Sow all her pigs & all my hogs up this morning & look well

1873 Sept 9th Hauling Logs for Hog pen morning & succored Tobacco some - I Carried Nannie up to Sallies to day & Come back, still Cloudy

10. Still Cloudy & Kit is at work on Hog pen in morningSoon Began to pull fodder on my Lot to day & Put up Hog pen Halled some Logs for it & shelled corn

11th Sent Milton to Yates Mill 2½ Bus Corn for my Meal 3 Bushels lent Corn for Kit & 2 Bushels Corn for Sarah & Milton, Getting Board timber etc etc

12th Will Stack 1 Stack my fodder put Some in Granary. clear Nannie got home this night

13th Kit fixed my Buggy this morning getting Board etc

14th Myself & Nancy Raining & we did not go to went to meeting S S

15th Pulling fodder Milton Halling wood in morning clear pretty day & I went to Mr Bookers after money from Town Send & Roaches Debt got $20 69

16 & 17. I went to CH & Carried my wife Paid Legatees Balances Due against settled me as pacct & Rect. Settled by G D Neal & Reported to Court this day in full in full of all that owed Mr Hunts Estate Reported 3rd Feby 1870 pRect

18th Worming & Succoring Tobacco & worked some in fodder got it all tyed up rained nearly night last night & cloudy this morning - 19th working in Tobacco

19cloudy & likely for rain all day

20th Halled 2 Logs to Yates Mill 1 for Mr Yates & 1 for me 1 Turn meal for Mattherly & 1 for Miss Marha Neal brot Home for them Kate & Moses came here this evening

21 They went home this evening Kit from home to day & goes nearly every Sunday he is turned out of the Church, they Stack Some Blade fodder got 1 Grub Hoe & digger

22 Mrs Crews Mrs Wyatt Miss Martha Neal Andrew Wyatt & Robt Tucker pulled fodder for me

to day this Side of the Branch & Mary & Geo Pulled in the Brick Kilmn Cut. Kit Sarah & Milton Pulled & finished next to woods & Pulling on Branch the other Side & some this side nearly done pulling to night clear & cool I cut Broom & Saved the Seed this evening

23rd Mrs Wyatt Andrew Wyatt & Robt Tucker Here to day pulling fodder to day Kit Sarah & Milton Pulling fodder on Branch Nearly done pulling then Saving it & worming & Succoring Tobacco & Logs for Tobacco House

24th Mrs Crews ½ day tying up fodder Mrs Wyatt ½ day Miss M Neal ½ Andrew ½ day tying up fodder Robt Tucker ½ Martin Smith ½ day tying up fodder & getting together,

25 Kit Sarah & Milton gone to so I hear —Martins Smiths cloudy & fodder dont dry much

26 Kit & Sarah & Milton doing but little Very warm to day fine weather for fodder

27 Halled some Logs for Barn & succoring Tobacco up above granary I went to Edmonds House raising & Mr Woodings cloudy this morning

28th Like for rain I expect to go to Sunday School to day got up 9 Pigs for Mr Moses to alter for me tomorrow or next day

29th Cloudy & raining a little this morning Soon, then cleared of & fine day Raising Barn here this morning very warm, finished raising Barn & Putting Log in end of old prize Barn Sam Mattherly Henry Whitmore from Wm Lewis s Edmonds Tucker Robt Tucker his Charles Miller & Lowry Graves Hobson from Mr Woodings Come Martin Smith Come time enough to get his Dinner fine day

30th Raining a little this morning Set up 2 Coal Kilns to day & fired them did not not rain I went to Mr Tom Yates about altering my 9 Shoats & Cut 1 Bull Small
