His Excellency Joseph McMinn

Governor of the State of Tennessee

The undersigned humbly represent to
your Excellency that at the last August
session of the Circuit Court; held for the
county of Franklin, a certain Craven Payton
was convicted of horsestealing, and has
suffered all the corporal punishment by
law inflicted on him; and six months
imprisonment in the Jail of Winchester
was annexed as a part of his punishment
he has remained in prison since his
conviction, which is upwards of five weeks,
That the said Payton was prior to this
offence (as we are informed) a man of good
character that he is now extremely poor,
and has a very indigent and helpless
family; and we believe no benefit can
result to the community from his con
-tinuance in prison the whole of the time.
We therefore beg leave to represent the said
Craven Payton to your Excellency as a
proper subject of Executive clemency
and on account of his heretofore
good character, and the present distress
