His Excellency Joseph McMinn

Governor of the State of Tennessee

The undersigned humbly represent to your Excellency that at the last August session of the Circuit Court; held for the county of Franklin, a certain Craven Payton was convicted of horsestealing, and has suffered all the corporal punishment by law inflicted on him; and six months imprisonment in the Jail of Winchester was annexed as a part of his punishment he has remained in prison since his conviction, which is upwards of five weeks, That the said Payton was prior to this offence (as we are informed) a man of good character that he is now extremely poor, and has a very indigent and helpless family; and we believe no benefit can result to the community from his con -tinuance in prison the whole of the time. We therefore beg leave to represent the said Craven Payton to your Excellency as a proper subject of Executive clemency and on account of his heretofore good character, and the present distress
