ran into a mole working -- a line of cracks
merely in the newly wet and laid ground --
ground previously loose sand or gravel, with
no chance of a mole showing its presence.
As noted above, after about 15 minutes watching
I saw the ground move at one end of the
line of cracks. I promptly stamped on the run
each side of the point of movement, and then
dug frantically between, with the second or third
scoop, throwing the surprised mole clear. Later
in the day, I found two more workings,
but failed to see actual movement. So the
rain brot the collector beneficence -- the second
know specimen of Scapanus anthonyi!
Beside the other mammals listed for today despite the rain, my
trap-line brot 2 Peromyscus truei,
which were discarded; also the steels a Citellus beecheyi, ditto.
It cleared off this afternoon, and tonight the
cold air is settling most noticeably.
