1837 24th 4 mo A severe snow storm commenced by day. Light in the morning, wind at NE and continued during the day, and the wind blew very heavily. Such a storm of wind, snow & rain I never knew at this season of the year. The tide covered the wharves in many places. The wind was so violent that the harbour was covered with "white caps".
A schooner drifted from Bass river to near Tuckernuck the [DONHOMIE?] and others went to her in a Boat, and with great danger of the lives, got her into Tuckernuck harbor, since which the owners & Master came here and redeemed her by making [???] satisfaction to those who saved her, who received her from at the wharf in our harbour.

4mo The distress of the people of this country occasioned by the scarcity of money, is beyond all former periods within the memory of man - which is mostly occasioned by the Great speckulators [SPECULATORS] on land, and on the produce of the Country viz. Flour, Cotton, etc. Which has enhanced the price of Provisions to an enormous rate, and brought distress on the people.
But the scale of late has turned against those who have tried in vain to monopolize the trade of this country in their own hands to the detriment and distress of the bulk of the community at large. The importers of goods are some of the classes who are most in distress. They have imported from England alone towards 100 million dollars in goods. Instead of selling the goods & paying their debts, they have speculated on western lands & co. And now the find they must sell the land for what it cost, & their debts in England, France & other places not paid.
