14th Sunday Raining & a sleet this morning, Kitty better weather cold & real winter ever since 1st Dec 1845

15. Raining this morning & cant do any thing out striping Tobacco very wet about 9 oclock it commenced snowing & at 2 in the evening continues to snow. snow 1/2 shoe Deep, pleasant Day since Decr. came in yet. Snow 7 or 8 Inches Deep

16th Fair & cold snow melted but little

17th Cloudy & like for Rain cutting & Halling fire wood this day ——

18th Raining & we are striping Tobacco snow melted but litte yet. about 1/2 done grubbing new ground.

19 Cold & windy, real winter weather cutting fire wood in new ground

20 this day given Bond to Wm Dews Admr of Mary Stone Decsd Jno S Lewis Scty for $31.50 for six Bbls corn — I am also Scty. for Mr. J.S. Lewis for $73.50 to same for 14 Bbls corn bot by him at said sale ———— this day Saturday Strait S. meeting is a tremendous cold day & at night the wind blows & is as cold as I most ever saw & there has not been as yet a pleasant day in this month — went to meeting & pd $5. to J T. McL no meeting on acct weather Preacher not there

1846 June 23 This morning quite & finish =ing Plowing & weeding fresh ground allmost ruined with grass & wet etc. weather quite cool last Rain we had was last Friday — — I expect to send to Mill Mill sent to mill — cloudy to night & weather a little warmer

June 24th Plowing & weeding corn cut Lots wheat at 12 Oclock Plowing Cotton Sweet & Irish Potatoes & Hilling them up

25 Fair day & moderate, trying to get done Plowing & weeding corn to day Pompey foundered & cant Plow

26 Cutting wheat at Stony Point today Finished at 12 Oclock Bot 5 Bbls corn at Mrs M Stones sale last fall at $525, 5 Bbls Do in Lynchg at $3.70 Mrs Hunt gave me 1 Bbl which comes in good time as we are laying by Our corn & our corn nearly out

27th Weeding out Branch Tobacco today sent to shop layed by all corn this side branch

29th Laying by corn & weeding Tobacco on Branch sent for Doct. Thompson for alse

1858 Oct. 26th finished sewing wheat in Lot at Cedar Hill this day & went to Plowing at fresh ground shingling House Mr Wyatt & Henry - Mr Chumbley at aspen Grove & Jordan halling wood at work on corn shelling Room at Corn House finished sewing wheat in fresh ground at Cedar Hill

27th Finished sewing fresh ground at Cedar Hill shingling House Mr Chumbley at work at Plantation on Carriage house & covering negroes house Finishing shingling one side of house Jordan Halled wood at home & Halled wood for Mr Neale-

28. Chumbley & Jordan at home balance up at Cedar Hill sewing wheat & covering House finishing corn shelling Room – – – – – cloudy & like for Rain, Rained a little last night - put my hogs at Stoney pint at this time - Rained a little off & on nearly allday Just began to Shingle front side of House at Cedar Hill, Mr Wyatt left yesterday evening. We finished plowed up Land for wheat but did not Sew it. we shelled Corn & fix stable in evening -

29th Began to Strip ^^Tobacco in new prize Barn to day all Come home from Cedar Hill, to day & last evening - still Raining

30th Went to appraise Mrs Stone Estate, Mr Chumbly Jordan & Lowry halled up Logs for overseers house at Cedar Hill gathered Succors here Skimed stable Logs etc gathered Cotton

31st Stayed at home all day little sick

Novr 1st Digging Sweet Potatoes this day & yams Sent Henry & jerry Smith to Cedar Hill Shingling House Sent to Buck to Mill5 Bags 9 Bushels Corn for meal - clear this morning

1859 March 15th Moderate weather —— but very wet. Cant Plow Halled up another Stack Blade fodder did not hall up fodder Halled wood fixed office & Porch etc Mr Chumbly done up chimney & chinked & daub it

16th Mr Chumbly Henry & claiborne all gone to Roll Logs at Mr Hunts Clem Lila working in Garden Planted simbling Cucumbers & set out some Trees in Yard, little Henry & Jerry Smith Plowing to Sew Oats, fine weather Sewed Collard Seed over in Plant Beds Clara had a Heifer 12 or 13 this mo. at aspen Grove.

17th Piling manure in cow pen Sewing & Bushing in Oats this morning Mrs Hunt & Nannie gone to see Mrs Scruggs, to day - cloudy weather

18 I went down to aspen Grove got 5½ Bus Seed Oats making 30½ Bus Overseer & negroes beginning to put up Barn etc negroes House & began to Rain hard & wind blew very hard blowed down a great deal of fencing again, Rained till nearly night Sent Henry to Carried 2½ Bus. for Chumbly & brot home our Turn yesterday —

19 Laying foundation of negroes House Sent a Turn Corn ½ Barrel for us & brot back Chumbleys wind blows very hard yet & has Turned a good deal colder — Cutting malling & Plowing after morning

20 Turned more moderate –

21 I went to Court on Mrs stones business Plowing & sewing Oats & Rye in Peach Orchard fixed bridge cut & malled wood & Rails put up fencing etc —

22 Finishing sewing Rye in Peach orchard

1859 Augt 9th I am going to the CH to day to see about Mrs Stones business as Commr Agreed with Cothran for another year as overseer —dry weather yet Mr Waldron brot another Load Shingles 1977 hundred above like the others I got of him @$3½ pr Thousand. dry weather yet

10. 10th Raised The Top of our Barn to day Mr Cothran Jordan Sandy & Lowry Came up to help us got it done & they went home little after 12 Oclock I went to Edge Hill to meeting — dry here yet tho fine Rains not far off

11th I stayed at settling with Mr Faris Whitehead wrote Several letters etc one to Bro. Jno & Jonathan Duffy & Henry Wingfield, Mr Chummy & Henry & claiborne at work on Barn, balance Cutting clem spining & drying fruit

12th Same work to day I am going to aspen Grove this evening & James Shields

13the went to meeting to day Mrs Hunt Came back here dry & Hot yet 14th went to meeting

15th went to Court. Balance claiborne little Henry & Jim gone to Fannies to thrash wheat Halled 2 Logs to Mill & Halled plank from mill wormed & Succored & toped Tobacco got done a little after 12 oclock round ing & Jointing shingles in evening I Bob Worked here this day —

16th Mr chumbly Hunting Corn wheat or something to Eat. Henry Rounding shingles Bob Here again this morning —
