Proprietors' 1850

Pursuant to the foregoing notice which was published in the Boston Daily Advertiser, a newspaper printed in the City of Boston more than seven days in succession before the said time of meeting, The Proprietors of the Cemetery of Mount Auburn met met at the time and place designated in said notice. A quorum having assembled, the President Dr Bigelow took the chair.

The Treasurer's and Superintendent's reports were presented read, and ordered to be recorded.

The President submitted a written account of the doings of the Trustees for the previous year and of the present condition of the Cemetery, which was accepted and ordered to be placed upon the Society's files.

Trustees elected.

The following named gentlemen were then unanimously chosen by ballot to be trustees for the ensuing year. Jacob Bigelow, George W. Crockett, B.R. Curtis, C.P. Curtis, J.J. Dixwell, B.A. Gould, Isaac Parker, James Read, and Mace Tisdale.

A proposition from James Munroe & Co to furnish catalogues for general distribution to the Corporators was discussed, and finally referred to the Trustees.

Superintendent's Report 1850

Mount Auburn Cemetery. . Geo Wm Bond Esq. Treasurer of the Cemetery Corporation, Dear Sir, The whole number of lots improved, the past year by being graded &c. was one hundred and six, Whole number of Lots fenced thirty five, whole number of tombs built five, whole number of monuments erected thirty, whole number of interments four thousand one hundred and ninety nine. Whole number the past year five hundred and fifteen. Respectfully yours Rufus Howe. Supt.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Suffolk ss. . Then personally appeared Henry M. Parker and made oath that he would faithfully perform the duties of Secretary of the Proprietors of ^the Cemetery of Mount Auburn. Before me C.P. Curtis Justice of the Peace

Trustees.

Pursuant to notices issue in the usual manner the Trustees met at the office of C.P. Curtis Esqr, at . Present Messrs Bigelow, B.R. Curtis, Dixwell, Gould, Parker, Read and Tisdale. The Superintendent and Treasurer were also in attendance.

Superintendent his duties &c.

The Secretary read a communication from Mr Howe, in relation to his duties, compensation, &c &c. for services as Superintendent. The matter was discussed at large. Mr Parker retired before any action was had.

Special provision for Mr Howe.

Voted. That in consideration of the long and faithful services of Mr Rufus Howe, the present Superintendent, an annual grant of two hundred dollars (payable quarterly) be allowed to him in addition to his salary. the arrangement to continue until the farther action of this board.

Superintendent's house.

Voted. That the whole subject of the superintendents house, its location, size, repairing, building anew &c &c and the matter of his boarding laborers be referred to a committee of three consisting of Messrs Bigelow Gould and Tisdale. Said committee to report at a future meeting of this board.

Trustees .

Pursuant to notices issued in the usual manner the Trustees met at the office of C.P. Curtis Esqr on the Present Messrs Bigelow, C.P. Curtis Crockett, Dixwell, Gould, Parker, Read and Tisdale.

Superintendents house. Repairs of.

Voted. That the committee on lots be authorized to make such repairs and alteration of the superintendent's house as they shall judge expedient.

Proposal to obtain an additional act for the purchase of land.

Some discussion having arisen as to the right of the Corporation to purchase real estate not actually adjoining the present enclosure of the Cemetery, the President was appointed a Committee, with the assistance of the Secretary, to procure the passage a new act enlarging the rights of the Corporation in this respect. Adjourned.

Trustees

Pursuant to notices issued in the usual manner, the trustees met at the office of C.P. Curtis Esqr. . Present Messrs Bigelow, C.P. Curtis Dixwell Gould Parker and Tisdale.

Superintendent Complaint vs. him by J.T. Austin.

The President laid before the meeting two letters from the Hon. James T. Austin alleging and charging upon the Superintendent a gross dereliction of duty in not seasonably preparing a grave on his lot. The letters were referred to a Committee of three, vis C.P. Curtis, Gould and Parker with instruction to inquire into the circumstances and to report at a future meeting. Adjourned.

Trustees. .

Pursuant to notices issued in the usual manner the Trustees met at the office of C.P. Curtis Esquire at . Present Messrs Bigelow, C.P. Curtis, Dixwell, Parker, and Tisdale.

Trees to be trimmed _ underbrush to be removed.

Voted. That Dr Bigelow be requested to instruct Mr Howe to take farther measures to remove under brush and for the trimming of trees &c. as may be necessary for the improvement of the grounds.

Safe.

Voted. That J.J. Dixwell be appointed a committee of one, with full powers to provide a suitable safe for the use of the Secretary in the preservation of his Records &c

Avenues to be finished off.

Voted. That Mr Howe cause two or three of the principal avenues to be finished off in the most approved manner, under the advice of Mr Tisdale, keeping an account of the expense of doing so which shall be reported to this board. Adjourned. A true record Attest. Henry M. Parker. Secretary.

Jonn Preston's claim.

Voted. That Messrs James Read and B.A. Gould be a committee to settle with Mr Jonathan Preston in relation to his claim for compensation in overseeing repairs on the Chapel; it being the opinion of this board however, that one hundred dollars will be an adequate sum to compensate him fully. Trustees. .

Boston. The Trustees met pursuant to adjournment, and without any formal action adjourned to meet at the office of the Secretary at at which time and place were present Messrs Bigelow, B.R. Curtis, Gould Parker and Tisdale. The Treasurer's report for the year ending . was presented, but not yet audited. Thereupon Voted. That the said reported be accepted, when it shall have been approved by the Auditor.

Proprietors. 1851.

Mount Auburn Cemetery - The Annual Meeting of the Proprietors of the Cemetery of Mount Auburn, will be held at the office of the subscriber in Boston, at No 46 Washington street on to choose Trustees for the ensuing year, to hear the report of the Treasurer, and to act on any other business which may legally come before the said meeting. Boston. Henry M. Parker. Secretary.
