Dear Brother

I write this to you hoping you may get it before you leave for Taliaferro Court. I shall write to Judge Thomas by the same mail denoting my letter to Sparta. I wish you to send down to our office and get that letter for him & see that he gets it. I can not be at our court. Apart from public business here. I can not go. I am too unwell to risk the travel. I am very bad off today - cannot leave my room I am suffering from something like rheumatism. I could not undertake

the travel. The weather here at this time is exceedingly inclement. It commenced suddenly friday and for the first time this season we have had winter weather.

Besides this Pierce is very sick. He was taken friday. His attack was severe cold - Pneumonia is prevailing. I have Dr. Johnson with him and hope he will not be confined long but I could not have him at present. He has been in bed since friday. I have thought that my exposure in looking after him and other matters since his attack may have contributed to my own indisposition. I have now another boy here to wait on both of us.

Several members are now confined to their rooms with illness. Letcher of Va and Branch of N.C. are two of them. If you take the money you spoke of over to Crawfordville take up my note to William N. Green for $1200 and the balance apply to my note to Mr. H. Chapman. Have all my cases continued. The State vs. Allen's son a free negro is the most important and Mrs. Allen Mr. Bench family for Divorce the next most important. I have some other cases one of Dick Newsom vs. John Evans - Let them all be continued. You and the Judge will find all things in readiness for your comfort at my house. I can say no more now.

Yours affectionately

Alexander H. Stephens
