Sir:

I have just returned from Cape Foulweather where I have been to commence work on the Light Keepers dwelling for that station. My contract calls for the house to be enclosed by the 1st of November next, and completed by the 30th of June 1872.

Owing to the heavy rains which have just fallen and the unavoidable detention at sea of the vessels bringing my materials from San Francisco, I find it impossible to have the building enclosed by the time specified in my contract; and I therefore respectfully ask that I be allowed to defer the
