Dear Ms. Hall:
Thank you so much for taking the time to write and suggest another idea for a possible compromise on proposed fair housing legislation. At the present time, it is doubtful that any kind of compromise will make any difference, as it would appear that petitions submitted by the Milwaukee Citizens Civic Voice group contain enough valid signatures to tie up Council action for some time to come. In addition, a Bill has passed the State Assembly and is now awaiting Senate action which would make the Mayor's provision that enactment of a municipal ordinance contingent upon action by the suburbs illegal. At this point, it seems almost as if we are right back where we started five years ago as far as a just and meaningful fair housing law is concerned.
I do appreciate your concern, though, and your support. You must be gratified, as I am, to see the suburbs beginning to take the lead in securing equal rights for all citizens. We can only hope that, before two awfully long, the city, too, will join in what can only be seen as a just, and long overdue move toward guaranteeing freedom of movement and adequate housing for everyone.
Sincerely,
Vel R. Phillips
