after writing that letter I left Plum Hill( which
by the way is no hill at all but as level a plain
as you ever saw) I went up to the Richlands
of New river and stayed with Colonel [ ]
until Tuesday morning when I went to Trenton
the county east of Jones County - The win
ter and thus far of the spring have been so mild
that vegetation is much advanced in this sec-
tion. The woods already begin to look green
and every branch and the banks of every
river and creek begin to turn with flowers.
The yellow jasmine grows in great profu-
sion all over this part of the county and
with the [ ] gives it quite a gay and
beautiful appearance. The day wood too is
in full bloom and that together with the
earlier fruit trees almost [ ] us into the
belief that we are in the middle of spring
while in fact it has but just commenced-
The court in Jones opened on Wednesday
and [ ] the [ ] [ ] of two
days- It frequently begins and ends the same
day- on Friday morning I left Trenton
and spent two days with Mr. [Naples?], a very
clever gentleman of Jones County and came
to this place this evening- The day has been ve-
ry warm, and I feel very [ ] the effects
