Transcription Help

  • Transcribe the text as is, including punctuation, misspellings and abbreviations.
  • Misspellings: You may correct a misspelled word by typing the correctly spelled word in brackets after the misspelling: werk [work]
  • Illegibile text: Indicate illegible text with 2 question marks on either side of the word(s) in question: ??work??
  • If a word is completely illegible marke it: ??illegible??
  • Line Breaks: Hit Enter once after each line ends. Two returns indicate a new paragraph, whether indicated by a blank line or by indentation in the original.
  • Abbreviations or shorthands: Transcribe people's names exactly as they appear, including typos and abbreviations: Thpmas or Wm. For town and city names, however, type the correct name: Marengo instead of Maringo
  • Marginalia: Do not transcribe annotations or marginalia not written by the author.
  • Tables: Skip any tables you see for now, unless you have a lot of experience with table encoding on From the Page.

Transcribing

Once you sign up for an account, a new Transcribe tab will appear above each page.

You can create or edit transcriptions by modifying the text entry field and saving. Each modification is stored as a separate version of the page, so that it should be easy to revert to older versions if necessary.

Registered users can also add notes to pages to comment on difficult words, suggest readings, or discuss the texts.
