A Petition is signing at large by the
Inhabitants, to Congress, the object of
which is to oppose Petitions got up through-
out the States to prevent the Mail running
on first days of the week.

See page 18 The digging a Channel over the Bar
was found, in the course of last season, was found
to be a work far more extensive & laborious
that was generally anticipated; Notwithstanding
the Machine performed as well as could
be expected, yet they made but little
progress -- which may be ascribed to many
causes. Firstly, the machine was not near
long enough, which caused them to lay by, in
a common strong westerly summer wind --

2d. It was remarked that the season was
uncommonly windy; 3rd. It was thought that
the works might have been kept going Night
& day. Wm Prescott discovered the latter part
of the season, & found by experiment, that
the alteration facilitated the business, quite
to expectation. 4thly It was found there
was a much greater quantity of sand to be
removed than was at first calculated.

And more time in carrying it to the
place of discharge was spent, than was expected.
So that on the whole it generally believed that
there will not be a Ship channel dug over
the Bars & flats; but however Prescott
is making preparation to commence again
when the proper season arrives. He thinks
the most of the foregoing objections may be
removed. He is now this winter lengthening the
1mo. 1830
machine 22 feet, by which he thinks it will enable
him to keep the works constantly going gales excepted
day & night. He calculates in the Spring before the
time to go out to the Bar, to dig out the Docks
