North Carolina during the epidemic of influenza.

In the united War Work Campaign North Carolina gave over one
million dollars, which was far more than was asked of her. In the
Liberty Loan Campaign North Carolina subscribed over 138 millions,
which is 12 per cent more then the maximum amount asked from the
State. Although the War Savings Campaign came in the midst of the
influenza epidemic of 1918, North Carolina suscribed over 21 million
dollars in War Savings Stamps. She led the South in the purchase of
War Savings Stamps with the exception of Tennessee and Texas. Her
War Savings purchases equalled the combined purchase of Virginia
and South Carolina, less one million dollars. In the number of her
citizens who bought War Savings Stamps she also led the South with
the exception of Tennessee and Texas, and also led such populous
states as New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan and New Jersey.
North Carolina has profited by her thrift in these finacial drives
of the war, for today the savings bank deposits of North Carolina
have been increased nearly 50 per cent.

The first American decorated while serving with American troops
was a North Carolinian; the first American to bring down a foreign
plane in combat was a North Carolinian. The foremost Red Cross worker
with the Allied troops was a North Carolinian. The first sailor
wounded in the World War was a North Carolinian. The first officer
to command a detachment of Americans ever to march through London
was Col. William P. Wooten of North Carolina. The commanding genius
