NOTES
Lines 8 & 9: A sulfurbottom is a blue whale; blackfish are generally pilot whales.
Lines 8 & 26: This logkeeper often uses the term "cept of" when recording a course change. A similar term, "kept off" is used in other logs when sailing near a port, but the term used here is not the same and lost to this transcriber.
Line 34: This apparently identifies two members of the crew. Could not match the legible portions to any names in the shipping list other than the possiblity of Levi Hunt, a greenhand, but the first name doesn't match.
Lines 35 & 36: This apprently describes a fight between two seamen named in line 34.
Line 39: On most whaling voyages, Christmas is a normal work day; at most, reduced to ship's duty. It is possible that a fight was started by someone overtaken by the lack of a celebration.
Line 42: Flogging was banned by Congressional action in 1850. This punnishment was rather common before that, and a few instances of flogging are recorded later.
