Mount Auburn Cemetery.

SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE,

(P.O.) Mount Auburn, Mass., Mar. 8, 1871.

To the Trustees of Mount Auburn,

Gentlemen,

There is a small piece of land (containing about 2,984 sq. ft.,) at the N.W. corner of our Greenhouse Garden, which was leased Alexr McDonald for 10 years from the 12th Feb. 1867, for a marble yard, at $100 a year. [It is shown on the enclosed sketch in red.]

This piece of land comes quite in the way of the entrance to our new propagating houses; and would be very useful to us to hold the hot-beds which have been displaced by the said houses.

I do not know that I can say that it is absolutely indispensable to us; but there is no other land so good or so convenient on which to set

hot-beds; and I think that we can easily make it earn (in that way,) more than the sum we now receive for rent.

Mr. MacDonald has removed, (some time since,) all his property from the land; and I presume would be quite ready to give up his to us, for any use except that of a rival marble yard.

I think there is no manner of doubt that our needs of room for gardening purposes will call loudly for this land before the 6 remaining years of the lease are out.

The extension of our larger greenhouses, (which I have proposed to recommend in a year or two,) would occupy the land; and any plan for improved houses of the larger kind ought to embrace it as it is the only high land available.

(We need more gardening room so much that I have proposed to give rep for that use a part of what is called the "Superintendent's Garden" for next summer.)

For present convenience then, and with an eye to future necessity, I respectfully recommend that the lease to Mr. MacDonald, (with his consent,) be cancelled on payment of rent to date of action.

Very respectfully, C.W. Folsom, Supt.

P.S. We use the land every day for riding and walking on and should be seriously inconvenienced were Mr. MacDonald to claim his right of occupation.
