Dear Sir: Some months ago Mr. Gardner (then of Hayden's Survey) told me that you were considering the development of some new features in connection with the Johns Hopkins Univeristy. It occurred to me at once that you might do well to establish a special school of Terrestrial Physic or of Metereology and its applications.

I have lately often thought of my conversations with Mr. Gardner and write to inquire whether it will not be feasible for you thus to attempt to promote the study of these important subjects. I should respect that metereology would be recognised as a subject eminently worthy of special study and

Dear Sir

I enclose an open letter to Prof Rowland that you will, I hope heartily endorse and forward to him -- if consistent with your plans for the welfare of the Johns Hopkins University

I should think that by supervising the electrical observations of the American Medical Association Prof Rowland would be serving the best interest of the University & of the Physical and Medical Sciences.

This I believe, is the first time that any earnest step has been taken towards organizing in the U.S. an extended system of observations of
