striking and important discrepancy between the antecedent and a posteriori probable errors may require investigation, since it suggests some error in the theoretical assumptions. But the fact which is here important is that Quantitative Induction always makes a gradual approach to the truth, though not a uniform approach.

Qualitative Induction is not so elastic. Usually either this kind of induction confirms the hypothesis or else the facts show that some alteration must be made in the hypothesis. But this modification may be a small detail.
