which would require a volume for any adequate discussion, I will
just mention one reason for my opinion. It is that anatomical
features are generally well-adapted to their physiological uses.
Accordingly, I think we may infer from the light striking not upon
a continuous surface, but upon the extremities of rods and cones,
that the excitation of a nerve can only produce a simple feeling.
Of course, taken alone, this argument is far from conclusive.
But I will not follow it further. With that opinion, I naturally
think that there are distinct nerves whose sensations are closely
associated with those of colors. To show what I mean. I will suppose one
