It is desirable to remark at the outset that
the Mathematics of Multitude is not pure
mathematics. The reason is that the whole
[diagram]
application of Numbers to Multitude is based on the two four propositions.
I will state these propositions although it is not necessary you should follow them
exactly. It will be sufficient to apprehend their general character.
The first is, that if you take any two numbers say 3 and 7
and there is a collection [5 dots?] that 3 is used in
counting: one, two, three, four, five,— and there
is a collection that seven is used in counting
[9 dots] then either 7 is used in counting the first
or else 5 is used in counting the second.
