Ladies and Gentlemen:

Reasoning is not an art to be taught in 8 lessons; but I can show you how you can improve yourselves in it.
The first kind of reasoning to study is Deduction, and of deduction, necessary deduction.

It has taken two generations to work out the explanation of the reasonng of thematics.
The reasoning itself is verywhere evident; but to state in general terms and with precision how it proceeds, what the relation of the conclusion to the premisses is in each step has been no easy task.
Logicians of all degrees of competence have imgined they could describe the reasoning.
But when their explanations were examined, it was found that they passed over certain steps without explaining them, and that the wholw gist of the reasoning was contained.
How could those logicians so decieve themselves.
