I have nver read of any such state as that unless it be Switzerland and Belgium. There will be paupers and consequently thieves and other criminals. The oligarchical youth has no ambition. He is penurious. [?] to virtue but will cheat. He is a mean creature. Democracy comes from social revolution. It gives freedom to individuals. Priniciples will be disregarded. The democratical man is the vular rake. Pleasures are here distiguished into the necessary such as the mere pleasure of feeding and the unnecssary such as the pleasure of an epicure's dinner party. Plato considers the latter to be evil. He does not say so but it would seem to follow from his priniciples that we should lead the life of a Cynic that is of a philosophic swine. Next comes anarchy which being intolerable passes into tyranny.
