Surgery and Physic, or Medicine proper; but on the same principle of division according to methods of cure, we have to recognize as special sciences homeopathy and electro-homeopathy, electrotherapy, electrodiagnostic, hydrotherapy, light cure, (christian science, if this can be included among genuine inquiries,) with which materia medica, as contemplating pharmacotherapy, or cure by taking medicine, is to be associated. The latter embraces some specialized branches, such as alcaloidotherapy, as well as dosimetry and pharmaceutics. As a sort of appendix to these sciences that of nursing may be mentioned. Surgery includes certain specialized branches pursued by persons widely removed from regular surgeons, such as making artificial limbs, hair cutting, corn cutting, bone setting, dentistry, the business of oculists, that of opticians, etc. But some of these branches belong to hygiene rather than to iatric surgery. Upon the borders of hygiene is obstetrics. Coming to physic, some doctors limit their studies to the diseases of special classes of patients, such as vetenarians, gynecologists, infantile physicians, military surgeons, naval surgeons.
