4. The instinct for house and fire. One might surmise that this originated in a desire to protect oneself during the rainy season; but in point of fact it does not seem to be particularly connected with the health instinct. It is most remarkably connected with the religious instinct, almost all the great works of architecture being religious. Military and purely governmental buildings have been generally of very inferior importance.

5. The instinct for collecting things and for amassing wealth. The gambling passion seems to be quite opposed to this. Those who love money quickly pass the point where their accumulations are of any other use to them than as making them powerful. The love of collecting,
