March 15 - May 13, 1844

1844 March 15. Finished stripping Tobacco & prized our lugs & a part of our short Tobacco. Commenced sewing oats the 12th March but so wet only sewed 5 Bus & now all malling & fencing children started to school about 6th March but so wet they have gone only 5 days to this day. sewed Peas & Planted onions 1st March. Planted Potatoes 1st & finished the Patch

14th March by the spring. Sewed Peas Last Feby or 1st March.

28th Finished sewing oats this day. Sewed Flax seed also this day. Breaking up corn ground.

April 12. Sewed a flax seed this day. Planted Irish and sweet Potatoes on hill 5th Inst & set out yams. Began to make Tobacco Hills 11th Inst april Planted Snaps & corn in Garden this day. Tobacco Plants Square

12 Began to Plant corn far side of Johns field,- Flies just begun to eat Tobacco Plants.

15 Planting corn all hands this day. weather dry & Hot – for april.

16 This day Mr Moon & Irby come here to work to build new room mentioned. Commenced getting shingles first. Rained the[sic] this day in the night very cool.

17th Rained again about

19 Raining this morning. Prizing good Tobacco.

29. April has been generally warm. On last Saturday it rained hard & Hailed about Heavily but not none here. Finished Plank k[?] this morning.

May 4th Finished Plowing Flat ground for corn. Tobacco Plants on mountain large enough to plant.

13th Finished Hilling N. ground 11thInst Planted nearly 2000 new ground Toba. Hills [unclear] & Hilling second years ground.

1844 May 13th. Mr. Moon has been sick one week. Mr. Irby has been getting shingles that week. This day Mr. Moon came about 12 oclock & quite unwell. Not able to do much with a bad cold for 2 days nearly. He just would [run?] shingles & draw them.

17th. A smart hail this night & Friday 18th we planted our new ground tobacco & on 19th we are planting our second years ground. Finished planting our greens in the garden.

21 Finished hilling our second years ground. Weed out our sweet & hilled up our Irish potates.

23rd Began to weed corn this day.

27. Replanted tobacco on holiday.

June 14. Planted tobacco on branch this day. Replanted lot over & began the 12th June. to lay by corn. Moon & Irby gone for want of plank. Work out cotton, potatoes & planted Irish potatoes for winter use.

17 Finished weeding second years ground & this day began to cut wheat.

20 Replanting tobacco this morning from a light shower of rain last night.

21 Finished this morning cutting & stacking wheat & rye. Another shower of rain.

22 Sowed buck wheat this day. Began to hill up new ground tobacco.

July 3. A fine rain last night. Began to top tobacco. Done hilling up new ground tobacco. Nearly done laying by corn.

15th July. Mr. Sampson came here to make brick.

13 Finished making brick & have been kilning for several days. Barber in Vaughan place. Weather very dry & looks like starvation in our land.

Aug 14th A fine rain in the evening. Hardly finished kilning bricks. Got wet some. Too late corn I think.

15 Sowed turnip patch.

16 Succoring tobacco.

19 This morning burning bricks & treading out wheat. D. Bybee at B. kiln @ 3/9 per day.

22. Began to pull fodder.

29 Yet pulling fodder. Finished this days burning brick kiln this day bin at 10 days. D. Bybee & A. Compton helped.

26 Mr. Moon & Irby returned to work & have worked every this[sic] day this week.

30 Mrs Buckley died yesterday. Hardest rain last week & roaring[?] from the looks of the cloud I ever saw.

Sept 27. This month has generally been dry, 1 rainy day in it. Very summer indeed. Crops generally tolerable for this season. Hauled up bricks with 2 teams 4 days. Began to get up corn. Cut & housed new ground tobacco & cut lot & second years land this week. Commenced raining last evening. Friday & this 28th still raining regularly on. Moon and Irby not done much this week.

Monday 2nd Octr 1844. Mr. Samson came to begin to lay bricks & the foundation was dug & made beginning 3rd Octr at 9 Oclock 1844.

Cut my buck wheat this day.

Oct 9th Fine weather & we are laying our brick. Moon & Irby also here. Hauled up corn today from ship house.

11th Oct. Capt. G. W. Coleman altered Waxy & Pompey. Cloudy & like for rain.

28th Rained last week & this night. Rained harder than for several years. Putting up last story of house.

1844 Nov 1. Finished laying bricks & began to get up corn & sew wheat —

Nov 8. Sewed second years tobacco land - 29. Finished sewing wheat this day and sewed 17 bushels, getting corn out of the field - Federick went to Mrs. Hunts to make shoes on Monday

25 Moon &[unclear] came here to work in his plan on Wednesday after Tuesday 22nd putt new logs in Mrs Hunts granary. Polk elected President of U. S. - - - Mr Vaughan came here some time to pencil the house. Came on Sunday evening from Mr. Millers. stayed till Tuesday evening. Went down to M. [Mc?]. came again on Wednesday evening. Stayed till Thursday morning & in all the time only penciled the ends of the house rained all the time. left on Thursday morning. Came back here again on Monday 2nd Decem. Stayed till Wedne sday & done nothing again on acct. of rain. gone after breakfast — So much cloudy & rainy weather I never saw. My corn half of it in the field. Decem. 4th 1844 stripped tobacco 3oo they are cutting and grubbing in new ground

25 Dec 1844 b'ot of Mr C. Grasty tooth brush 23¢ 1 pocket knife 37¢ 3 tin cups 18¢ basket 20¢ making 984 no. bill for. Went to daub & fix house for M Hagood to live in near M. Jno D Hunts at plantation about one week before X 1844, Jon Jer. Jas. Hunt sick. 26th my wife gone to Mrs. Hunts beautiful weather, -

1845 D. Janry has been generally mild good deal Rain & cloudy weather

Feby 4 went to Mrs. Hunts to get Jer this morning. Raining after awhile. Snowing & about 12 oclock fair & warm & before Sun Sat. same day freezing wind from north & tremendous cold night

5. Very windy & cold the whole Earth like rock - Strip tobacco yesterday in new ground, began to break open corn ground last Jany

7th. weather a little moderate. We are laying [morm?] of new ground fence Moon & Irby making staircase

21st Feby. Rotted logs Wednesday last This day stripping tobacco, plowing & halling wood. weather very wet Burnt plank bed on Branch last week about middle the month.

1844 childrens going to school and 20th Sept went 4 days this week 4 27th " went 3 days each this week 3 Oct 4 went 3 days this week 3 — 11. went 2 days this week 2 —— 12 —————— memorandum of the time Mr.B, J. Lain worked for me @ 3/ Feby 2nd 1 day
