out of Villers-Bretonneux about 7 kilos away, living in dugouts. 13th moved again to some scrub & built ourselves dugouts. 14th Just getting ready for bed, & warned for guard over a lot of "duds" at B.H.Q. 15th Dismounted guard & warned to prepare to move. Moved up into reserve line. Changed over in daylight & got a bit of a "Straffe". Living in good little dugouts. 15 16th 17th Worked pretty hard D. Coy. had about 40 casualties with gas. 18th Went on first sick parade. We have seen a few airial fights lately. 3 planes came down one day One in flames, one hit by a shell. 20th Went to work carting wood in the village to the right of Cachy. Had a bag of wood blown up. 3p. Moved out 10 mile march to LaHoussoye 21st First wash for

8 days. Moved into new billets 22nd Went to Bonnay for a bath 23rd on Lewis Gun Range. 24th On Aeroplane Guard. 28th Sunday nothing doing. 30th Prepared to move at 5p. Went via Bonnay up the line. A Coy out in advance of the front line, in outposts. Things very quiet about here. 3rd we were relieved by B Coy. about midnight. Went back to support line. 4th 11-45 p.m. Went carting wire & pickets to outposts 5th 2p. warned to prepare for a hop over tonight. Moved up to the line, and just got out in front of the wire when I was hit, through the left leg. Got back to the B.H.Q. station & was dressed. Walked part of the way to Ribermont. 6th Sent to several dressing stations and at last to a

C.C.S. Put on Hospital Train and came down to 3 General at La Treport. Looked after well in Hospital. 12th On Hospital train again for Le Havre. 13th Landed in the after noon and taken on Hospital Ship "Carisbrook Castle". 14th Landed at Southampton and got train for Boscombe. Arrived about dinner time. In Queen Mary Ward. The wound is healing nicely. 15th Got up in the afternoon & went out with Sister Richardson, & Nurse Ashton to tea. 16th Out again with the Sisters, in the car, went to Milford and had a look at the Isle of Wight & back to Christchu -rch for tea. 17th Went to Bourn -mouth with Lamb. 18th Went with Sister, Nurse Ashton & Aussie and several of the boys for a picnic. 19th Nothing much doing, went for

a stroll. This is a fine district about here, and the weather is perfect. It would do me to be left here for the duration. 20th Went down to Boscombe with the nurses. 21st Left Boscombe to go to Harefield arrived and put in 14 Ward. 23rd Taken sick & put to bed in 8 Ward. Had a rough time for a few days. 30th Getting on well now. Very little mail from home lately. 3rd June. Still in bed. 7th Getting about again. 13th Warned to leave tomorrow. 14th Left in the morning for [Hardcott?]. 15th Classified B1A1. Going on leave next Thursday 20th Left Fovant 8-30. Arrived in London 1p. Went to [Horseberrie?] Rd and War Chest then to YMCA at Waterloo Station. Went with McCullie to the Criterion to see

"You never know, y'know". Very good. Got the train from King's Cross, at 10-10. Arrived about 4-30. Spent evening with Nellie Clegg. 22nd Saturday. Went to Bunces with Nellie Richmond, & Martha Shepherd. 23rd Walked round in the morning with Mrs Barraclough. Went out in the afternoon with Nellie, Martha & Mary. It seems strange up here without Bill, but they give me a good time. 24th Rolled out at 10-15 went down town. Went to see Mrs Henson, Mrs Cartwr -ight with Mrs Barraclough. 25th Went to see Cartwrights at Linley. Went to Palace in the evening. 26th Had a look at Brighouse Art Gallery, went to pictures with Nellie. 24th Went to Swimming Baths, and pictures
