1850 July 19 we have been laying by Corn all this week, have had 2 or 3 pretty Rains & we are trying to finish Laying by with Plows tomorrow worked Greens & garden to day Silling blown down shacks wheat choping & Thining Corn —— John Compton tryed this day by Mr Miller & myself for stabing & Killing Bro. 2nd June last, Committed to Jail,

20th Plowing & choping & thinging corn Did not quite get done Layinging by

21st my wife went to Mrs Hunts —

22nd A Fine Rain this morning, we are drawing Tobacco Plants to replant Our Second years ground & new ground fine weather for every thing growing

23 Rained nearly all day finished replanting Tobacco & thining Corn & cleaning off wheat yard -

24 Sent Fed to Mill 1 Bbl. - Henry gone to Mrs Hunts to Carry her corn home she lent me balance spining ground too wet to work

29 Halling up wheat till saturday evening when it rained Hilling up Sweet Potatoe Seed Sewed big stock Turnip Seed last week got from Doct T. Cutting Oats this morning & choping part of new ground Tobacco — Expect to sew Turnip Patch to day

31 Started to Lynchg broke a wheel the other side of Lynchg had it mended Rained every day but one got in Town soon friday morning & come back to Mr Moons, & got home Saturday evening 3rd Augt

1850 Sept 9th Rained we were Plowing, & Hilling up our tobacco by new Barn & Rain stoped us Fanned Out Wheat & shelled corn Rained nearly all night

10. worming & succoring & toping Our Tobacco cloudy & like for Rain ———

11 Pulling Fodder in Johns’s field till 12 Oclock & then finishing Hilling up lot by new Barn — tying up fodder in evening

12 Sold Wm Waller A ps Land supposed to be over 100 acres to be surveyedshortly by next to Mrs Hunts for 3$ pr acre $100 to be paid next June 1851 & then from 1st June one & 2 years for Balance, to be settled as soon as surveyed.

13. worming & succoring new ground Toba & Covering Barn there — etc etc

14th Sent to saw mill waggon & Cart 3 Logs 1 Long & 1 short. both, to be sawed into squared Edged Plank[s] 3 Bushels wheat for negroes & 1½ Bushels sent for flour, 1 Bushel of which got of Mr Neal who made 17 Bus. ½ Bushel of mine own crop toping over new ground to day wormed & succored alsoit & Covered our Barn ourselves this day —

=15. Rained in evening did not go to at Ricesmeeting

16. Rained in morning cleared off in evening Succoring & worming Tobacco at House Some spining Fed making Cates shoes,-

17. clear & cool Toping & worming & succoring all overTobacco not Hardly half done Pulling fodder yet & not cut a Plant of Tobacco Pulling fodder in Johns’s field this –

18th Pulled fodder till evening & then so cloudy & like for Rain we stoped wormed some Tobacco & toped some & cut fresh ground tops

19 Pulling fodder, Put sheep in lot this morning I went to Mrs Colemans’ to see about her Bay stand stole clear & warm my wife gone to Mr JD Hunts. & a day or Two ago went to Mrs Hunts

20th Sept 1850 yesterday it rained & did not stop till sometime in the night, most all & in fact all caught in rain we have pulled. I never saw such a time about saving Blade fodder in my life, we have not put up a stack yet & have none good & nearly done pulling tho dampest fall I ever saw & also latter part of the summer — Clear this morning Cutting tops Henry carried in cart Tobacco sticks to new ground from prize Barn my wife did not get back last night

21st Cutting tops Tying up & Blades stacking etc to day clear put up 3 stacks Blades last night

23rd clear morning - fine on Tobacco — Began to Cut Tobacco at mountain field this morning Put up 4 or 5 stacks Blade fodder & expect to put up several more to night, in Johns field not quite done cutting tops in Johns field, have old ready & next to Orchard to put & cut tops yet,

24th Stack our Blade fodder thats pulled 9 stacks Finished cutting over new ground Tobacco to day 4 scaffolds upwards of 1000 stacks there,

25 cutting to day in little & big second yrs ground my wife & Cate gone to Mr. Fitzgeralds,

26 Did not quite finished cutting over once Finished this morning Pulled Down all our Blade fodder to day clear warm weather

27 Cutting Tops & shocking them to day — Henry gone to mill 1 Long Hart Log for flooring Plank carried ½ Bbl corn, & we have Recd the Plank for the 1st Long Log we carr[i]ed but have [not] got any the short ones yet

28th Getting up apples for Vinegar Shocking Tops Tying up Blades & finishing fodder to day except stacking Turn back as I skiped 2 pages

1850 Decr 23rd Halled Tobacco from fresh ground barn to prize Barn, & Packed it down to strip

234rd Halled leaves till 12 oclock then fixed up cow shelter Rake in up manure & waggon & Cart Halling wood till night Fair & Cool, Killed 8 Hogs yesterday the 23rd 25th Stayed at home myself my wife went to Mrs Hunts

26th went to see Robt & Mrs McCullock Grastys Mrs Farmer etc etc as School Commissioner - etc

27 Rode all day as School Comr. & finished

28th Raining this morning moderate weather

29th cleared off cool

30th Halled wood & Cut in new ground Henry has been sick most one week

31st Finished Thursday & friday in Christmas getting last of Indigent children as S. Commissioner Snowed last night & we are striping Tobacco

1851 Janry 1st cleared off cool striping Tobacco that come out of the House the top Blowed off in fresh ground - expect to get done that to day — I went to Mrs Colemans & Yates yesterday to hire Jas The Snow is about Two Inches Deep

2nd Sent Fed to mill 5 Bushels wheat for chop 1½ Bbls corn for meal & ½ Bbl for overseer & to get a Bag Cotton at mill

7th Fine weather cutting in snow nearly gonenew ground Halling wood for Mr. Neale ½ day with cart Written to Mr Roach respecting Miss Milly Ann McCullock Land, & wrote a notice forwarning any persons from trespassing on it & offering it for Rent - or lease etc etc Halled Leaves & straw about this time

11 Burning & finishing Plant Bed on mountain & sewed it. 19 yds square cutting & pressin= 2 more to barn next week

1851 Janry 13th Burning Plant Bed by new ground next to Mr Neals - my wife gone to Mrs Hunts Fine weather about this time ———

14th Burnt Plant Bed at House & sewed it Kentucky Bull face Tobacco seed & white mustard seed sewed - in that one The one below new ground Big Brittle [Glen?] & Mr McCullocks sort mustard also same sort Tobacco seed sewed on mountain Fine weather this day going to have Land surveyed for Wm Waller ——failure

15 went to Danl Johns Sale bot 5 Boxes wafers 1 stretcher 1 wheat sieve 1 whip 2 slates

20th been cutting in new ground waggon & Cart Halled wood saturday, Thursday & friday— Plowed Tobacco Lot etc nearly done grubbing Henry sick in House with Jaw ach

24 Sold to John D Hunt a Tract of Land adjoining him containing 195 acres more or less for $600 payable in 1, 2 & 3 years from this day $200 in each paymt & carriage & Harness cover & Rench[wrench] etc. for said land rating the carriage & Harness at $190 making $790 for the land 195 acres more less right to be made & Bond given shortly as pr Recd given him for $1 in pt of Do pr Rect———cutting & Plowing etc etc

27 As pretty weather as I ever saw this time in year Plowing & Cutting in newground

28th Tooke down some Tobacco in Prize House tho not much cleared of windy & Cool this morning

29th quite cool windy weather cutting & Plowing

30 cant Plow waggon & cart Halling wood, cuttingin new ground Tremendous cool at this time & windy—

31 still cold Halling Rails around mountain field & fresh field this day Lila breaking flax cutting in new ground overseer broke his axis

Feby 1st very cold weather, cutting in new ground Henry Halling Rails & wood Fed gone to mill 1½ Bbls wheat for us ½ Bbl for flour ½ Bbl Corn for us & ½ Bbl for overseer
