Great Salt Lake City was located in Mexican territory from its founding in July 1847 until February 1848 (when the land that is now Utah became United States territory, through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo). Great Salt Lake City was located in unorganized US Territory from then until 9 September 1850 (when Utah Territory was organized). The city was renamed "Salt Lake City" in 1868 (dropping "Great" from its name and county).
