Saturday before 1st Lords day in Novr. 1818 after preaching met in conference a door was opned to receive new members + recd. Diner [?] belonging to Mr. Jones by letter

The committee appointed by last conference to point out the probavable cause of the great Coldness + declention of Religion made the following report which was recd. + Elder Spivey requested to present it to our next Union Meeting

Pursuant to an order of conference Your committee met and made a feeble attempt to develop some of the provable causes of the great Coldness [?] in religion which appears to prevale in the Church of Christ at Cashie - and also, to divine ways and means to remedy the much complained of + melancolly evil -

Your committee has great reason to fear one princath [?] reason why Zion languish is, that [illegible] to worldly minds to much engaged after the profits, Honours, pleasures + vain customs of this world, which has an unhappy tendancy of chilling there affection for holy Things [?] produces a backwardness in the duty they owe to God They become remiss in prayer, both Formely + Private, negligent in reading + meditating upon the word of God. Often absent fron the House of God and it follows as a natural consequence they cease communing with the Lord + his people + seem to have more fellowship with the World than with Saints. A! deplorable state!! may the Lord deliver us therefrom.

To attempt to point out the remedy Brethren, your committee feel much at a loss - However we will humbly recommend that following resolutions First to Santify a day of fasting, Humilation + Solemn prayer to almighty GoD, that he would cond'send to return + Visit Zion again

page_0075

Secondly, If we wish to enjoy our first love, we should repent and do our first works - retrace our steps + bring into action our respective duties. if we have neglected the duty of prayer in any point whatsoever, to be engaged in its Solemn exercises, that our incessant cry may be to the Lord "Thy Kingdom Come" That we should be more engaged in reading Blessed word of GoD + meditating thereon + punctual attendance to its admonitions to seperate from the world "But that we are a chosen generation a regal priesthood, a pecular people, Zelous of good works to offer up Spiritual Sacrifices to Almyty GoD through Jesus Christ our Lord" - In a word, to make the word of GoD our rule, both of faith + practice, all which we Sincerely recommend to your serious consideration

Your commitee further reccommend that the Church appoint a time + place or times + places as she may think propper to enter into a resolution to commence + perpetuate Serial prayer also that the Church should try to revive the rules + put into opperation the diciplin by which her members are to be governed --

1) The memores of Elder Aaron Spivey, coppied from his own reccord which was presented to the Church by a friend and ordered to be recorded as a testamony of respect this Church bares towards their much respected + Decd. Pastor -- To the reader --

It is natural after a person is removed into an invisable Eternity for there succeeding relations + friends who never had the opportunity of their personal acquaintance to ask who ware they + what ware they etc. in order therefore that they may not be mislead, by the prejudices of any, and not knowing the time of my departure I avail my self of this early oppurnity to inform them in the following sheats, tho' it may perhaps seem to savour to much vanity yet I hope (as the Lord knowith) any motives are pure, judging in this otheres by my own experience I take it for granted the above inquiry may be made for there satisfaction. They may peruse the following lines as ware written by my own hand, not thinking that it will ever be made publick as long as I live if ever, my main object is for the satisfaction of my succeeding relations into whose hands it may fall, it will only therefore be perused [?] but by few -- Praying it may be for the edification of them + redown to the Glory of God and this will fully compensate your unworthy Servant in the Lord Aaron Spivey

A Succinct account

Aaron Spivey was born in the County of Bertie + in the State of N. Carolina July 28th 1763: my Fathers name was Moses Spivey + my mothers Jemima (Hamers [?]) being the forth of Seven Children whom he had by said Jemima, And after a long illness he departed this life August 2nd 1771 at which time I was in my ninth year, my mother also died April in the Year 1779 leaving me in my Sixteenth Year, my Father in law (Viz) John Kittrell who married my mother by whom he had two children kept me clostly [?] at the Farming buyseness untill I entered my twentieth Year at which time he sat me at liberty to provide for my self. One thing I wish to relate with Gratitude that from my Cradle

page_0090

2) untill this time my moralls ware stickley attended to by my parents -- but with much regreat I must confess I soon took a different course in my conduct + so continued for some time heaping up Sin upon Sin etc. tho' frequently promising my own convicted conscience that I would amend my life (if not before) whe ever I got married falsely supposing if I had a morral character it would be injurious to my Honour, as religion was generally dispised in that day by men of Character, as they call'd them -- but so it was by the Almighty's good Providence that on the 28th of Dec. 1786 I inter =married with Eliza Grimes the Daughter of Saml. Grimes of the County + State aforsd., which whom I enjoyed mutual Happiness untill the Lord was pleased to take her to himself which melancolly day hapned on the 10th of July 1796. Aged 25 years 10 months + 8 days leaving me as tokens of her conjugal affections two only Sons (ver) Moses + Samuel having enjoyed in a great degree as much happiness as I promised in this state and being left with a large family I soon found the necessity + disposition to reinstate my self in my former situation again which took place on the 5th of January 1797 with Polly Marr [?] the Daughter of Abraham Marr + Prudence his Wife the latter of whome is a Zealous professor of the Baptist Society all of the County + State aforsd. I will now return to the time of first entering into a married life -- Having as I supposed got part of the impedements removed which was in the way of serving GoD + the time came which accor =ding to my former promises I was to reform for the better after a few days elapsed my mind was exercised on Various subjects and instead of entering on the important subject of a reformation (having acquired in my new state of life a small Family) my mind began to solicit wealth in Order to accomidate my Family This rationally appeared my Duty and I in a measure being in the circumstances of the Prodigal Son

page_0091

3) thought I would put off the Work a little longer untill a more Convenant Season that is untill I had gotten my Domestick affairs in such a train [?] there would be no obstruction in the way coming to this conclusion I rested tolerable contented but now and then had some imotions of mind for nearly six months when the bell of Mortality began to be inlarged in the Neighbourhood + death had + was about removing sum of my Neighbours + Near Conections out of time and while one of them (+ old comrade too) lay on his death bed I was sent for to Visit him on whome I attended alternenately [?] untill his Death, finding while I was there to human probability he must leave this World + go to Eternity -- this discovery induced me to consider the consequences as soon as this thought took place on my mind it was attended with such Gloomeness + Sorrow I endeavoured to Quench the consideration as soon as possible but duty forbed me totally withdrawing from the agonizing afflicted or else surely I should have attempted to do so but thought I it may be natural for every one when Viewing the Gloomy features of Death to be thus agitated + thought I will raise what fortitude I can and when I retire from the sight it will gradually decrease, but still detained with the allmost expired afflicted + as he drew nearer his expiring moments death appeared the more horrable at last the deadfull moment drew near when he was about to breath out his last breath, a certain Gentleman being present (whose name I ever shall revere) asked liberty to go to prayeres which was granted with marks of approbation + it was preformed with such Fervency + Zeal + shewed such earnings for the happiness of the Soul which in a few minutes made its flight which filled me with amazement after this that Gentleman + my self took a walk into the Garden each silent as we went except now + then exhorted a groan being these he laid his hand on my shoulder + said my dear friend our friend _____ _____ is gone to a long eternity if it had been your case instead of his what would be the consequence my heart sunk a Treamur [?] penetrated through every power of my Soul I was almost con =vulsed my Very Soul groned within me while my tongue cleaved to the roof of my mouth, here I am lost for want of language to express my self, after processing [?] a few minutes my affections being won

page_0092

4) over to the Godly man (for such I esteem him + believe he is now in Heaven prasing dying Love + reediming Grace) I cast my eyes towards him + beheld with admiration the smiling tear gently gliding down his cheaks this appeared to give his words almost a double force which he had said + continued to say in a short but an affectionate exhoration, after this we returned to the House where lay the lifeless corps which silently spake the same language to me, this hapned abt. the 3 or 4 of June 1787 after I returned home loaded with guilt and an increase of melancholy under dreadfull apprehensions of the Justice of GoD being executed upon me for my accumalated crimes, now I began to think diffrently to what I used to think I began to think there was no time to spare for the avenger of blood was pursuing me hard altho it was much sooner than I expected to attend upon the important buyseness I thought now as I had done hithertoo, it was enough to leave of sinning to excess, and pray + read GoD's word when convinent + he would be well pleased with me + all would be well. To work I went, but still affraid any person should know what was the matter + what I did should be in a private manner + when being in company to withdraw from old comrades was a task + when I would do it, being asked the reason, I generally made an excuse, which was not the princable cause + guarding my self against an impuation [?] of what was realy the matter (such is human Weakness O. nothing nothing! but the power of an Almighty GoD can rend the rocky hart + humble the proud + stubborn will) thus I continued alternatly heavy [?] three Weaks at which time I found my self no better Yea I saw more + more of my own weakness + imperfections - here my attention was called to the remembrance of a curcumstance that took place when I was about thirteen or fourteen Years

page_0093

5) of age prehaps sum may suppose the following circumstance shows too much inthusiasm or childish immagination but let that be as it may I believe it was a Vision + also am fully persuaded it was the Lords doing for we read in the prophet "Joel II.28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons + your daughters shall prophesy; your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see Visions: also Acts II.17 " The Vision was this. I beheld I believe on a certain day I was to die + what was more affecting I was to be misrable after death this greatly afflicted my mind it so opperated on me it was discoerable to my mother + after she intoragated me of the cause of my melincolly I related to her the Vision after making use of sum arguments to me that it was nothing more than a dream finding it availed nothing it did no little affect her mind + in tears she directed me to reading and praying my Answer was, it is useless for the Vision was I was not only to die but also to be misarable, two days had elapsed before I formed a resolution to follow my Mothers advice + on the third day the fatal hour was to commence accordingly the second day at night after great struglings in mind I resolved upon a resolution to prepare for the awfull moment it was on Saturday evening I began to call upon the Lord to have mercy upon my poor Soul, the next day I ventured to read the word of GoD, but my Soul was filled with such keen remorse my tears frequently Darkned my sight this day was spent in reading praying + lamenting (on Sunday evening near the setting of the Sun the Family -- walked in the Yard to bid some Visitants farewell, I followed them to the door was the House telling them it would be the last time I ever should see them in time, being fill'd with confusion I returned to take a Walk in some silent apart =ment of the Hosue with my Soul fervently ingaged with GoD for mercy (let it be observed by this time I began to plead with

some degree of faith, that the Lord would have mercy on me but I had no expectation I should live to see the next morning but as I observed as I left the door to retire I appeared to be struck with [illegible] & all the Vitals of life seemed to be faultring & I fully expected my departure was at hand my strength being so far exausted I began to stager a Bed being near at hand I threw my self prostrate on it on my face, and cried with a laudable Voise to God for mercy which my mother heard & come runing in to know what was the matter in the space of a minute after the opperation my mind was all serene the weight of guilt appeared to be eradicated from my brest my affections to God was unspeakable I felt Vigorous O what love broke through every power of my Soul for God & his works I never knew what it was to love my mother before yea the whole Family I viewed with new affections I requested my Father inlaw to read me some prayers composed for the sick for my eyes were so full of tears of joy & thankfulness I was not able my self, let it be observed I still thought of dying & went to bed with no other expectation & when I bid the Family good night I told them I shall see them next in a nother world in the mean while my mind continued calm and with such a glow of affections towards God which was joy unspeakable & full of Glory, yea my mind was so wafted upwards in contemplating upon my futer happiness & the company I should keep in Eternity, that Saints & Angels was offered to my conseptions & what still animated my mind the more a smiling God who once appeared to be frowning on me O my Very Soul rejoices while I relate it O that I had a tongue & a Voice sufficient to sound it out so loud that men & Angels might hear & Glorify God. But to

page_0095

7) Bed I went with this esolution to lye awake praying untill Death should give the signal taking but little rest for the two last nights + my mind being now in a measure unintrupted I inadvertantly fell asleep + the next I know was the sun shining on my Bed which after I had opned my eyes it was several minutes before I could convince my self whether I was in this World or in Heaven (Dear reader excuse my extravagancy for my Sould is almost ready to break out in extasy to advert to that period) Accordingly I arose + assumed my former conduct in serving my parents with delight uninterrupted in mind, the World + Pleasures appeared to me less than Vanity, thus I continued for several Weaks in Quite possession of a serene mind from thence I began (to my great Grief + shame) gradually to fall into the customs of the folly of Youth tho at times followed with better remorse, which had a tendancy of imbittring all my sinful pleasures -- prehaps it may seem strange to sum to hear nothing of Crist in the above narration as for that + the nature of the Work wrought I submit to the impartial reader -- I will now return + take up my subject where I left it after the Death of my old Companion having adverted to the circumstance as related above together with any conduct from that to the present time it increased my Guilt + finding (not with =standing all my prayers, tears, + extorted groans) I find my self exposed to everlasting misery Yea in so great a degree I was affraid to be alone in the Night lest Satan by the premission of the Almighty shall drag me bodily down to endless pain -- O! what a confused mind tongue canot express here I found all my human exertions would profit me nothing in point of Justification + I was ignor =rant of a redeemer as my religious as well as other Educa =tion was but scanty. When I would attempt to read the Word of GoD I found my self so clearly condemned which added to my

8) my grief I declined for several days reading any in it and tried to reconcile my mind against the worst of miserys being well perswaded it would be just in God to eternally frown on me but O! how painfull was the thought but still I was induced from some secret impulse to still plead for mercy, at length as I was riding the road in the evening I think the first Wednesday in July being under uncomon excersice in prayer pleading with GoD to shew me how it was possible for my Soul to be saved Jesus Christ then for the first time was revealed to me as a Sufficient Savour. The next enquiry was is he my Savour? my own heart with a Dread replied no, tho I confess with Joy I had some gleam of hope from a discovery I had of the blessed Redeemer as the Savour of Sinner thus my mind was ruminating on this discovery but my Soul was so irrit =ated that night sleep departed from my eyes + I think I can truly say with the prophet my Couch was witness to my tears -- Near 12 Oclock at night my Soul was so overwhelmed with grief I was induced to try to pray (notwithstanding I was often afraid when I was attempting to pray I was agravating my wo) but I proceeded (as I had been shewn that the blessed Jesus was the Savour of Sinners) now my prayer was that I might discover him to be my Savour after fervently beseching the fountain of Widsom to reveal him into me not only a sufficient but a willing Savour to save such a unworthy wrech as I was, in this adress I found some inducement to wait with more patience I also was directed to the word of GoD. under this impression

page_0097

9) I took a little repose being much discomposed for the want of it. accordingly in the morning I took corage to serch the Book of GoD praying in the mean while that I might be rightly directed I opned at the CI Chapter of St. Mathews Gospell + when I read the 3 last verses of that Chapter particularly the 28 the Words "come unto me, all ye that labour + are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." were repeated in my mind several times from hence I began to pay greater attention to the meaning of them + they ware explained thus to me that Jesus Christ is the inviter the object invited are those who are labouring under a Weight of their own guilt + Condemnation + they who comes must through themselves wholy on his will + mercy + be willing to suffer all things for his sake which I was induced to do and the Words seemed exactly sutable to my case and believing my self to be the invited this belief brought such gloryous discoveries to my mind they are beyond my expression, but bare with my folly a little while I related some of them having faith to rely on those words as addressed to me, they causd such light + love to brake through every power of my Soul which made it leap for Joy. which broght to my mind that saying of Psalmist "Weaping may indure for a night but joy cometh in the Morning Psalmes XXX.5 all my guilt immediately made its flight now I could behold the GoD of Heaven reconciled unto me through the death of his dear Son + the justifier of him that beleiveth in him nature wore a smiling aspect yea the sun in the firmmint appeared to shine with more brightness. I could read the sacred pages of Inspiration

page_0098

10) with comfort + find my soul more + more serene in the merits of my adorable Savour, which drew my soul out in live and obedience to Almighty God + could say "not unto me not unto me but unto thy name be the Glory given" -- I thought surley I never more could sin against so good a God. Yea it would rack my mind to think of ever again sinning -- my desires ware so aspiring I beheld Jesus in so many winning forms that where he was there I longed to be. my mind took a turn to consider of the condition my Family ware in, my Relations, my Neighbours, Yea + all man kind fully believing by nature they are the children of rath even as others, I amediately felt a longing desire to impart unto them what the Lord (as I hoped and believed) had revealed into me -- let it therefore be observed I saw none of these spiritual objects just mentioned with my natural eyes but they ware discovered by the Spiritual eye of faith which impart a greater sence of them than if there ware discovered with our natural eyes - for about Twelve months I continued under these impressions desiring to be more + more assimelated into the likeness of my blessed Redeemer alternately in a greater or less degree, expriencing weakness of faith and at last I think about the month of June (not having in this time the advantage of conversation with religious Characters being scarce in my neighbourhood only reading and hearing the Word of GoD which was a singular advantage) I found my faith to grow weaker + Weaker + a sense of my experense more obscure till a length I began to doubt of my Religion This idea brought much anxiety on my mind which made me roar [?] for the disquietness of my soul at length I concluded I was under a disception and as I was awfully afraid of being deceived I began to plead with the Lord to bring on my Convictions more powerfull than before + in order to bring this about I charged my self with all my crimes that I could recolect thinking they

page_0099

11) might exaggerate my conviction in this I found the Lord was Wonderfully mercifull for my utmost exertions would not bring again my former convictions thus I continued for some time in deep distress of mind not knowing what had beffalen me at length the Lord (as I believe) in his providence conducted one of his ministers to me being the first I had the oppurnity of Religious conversation with, after I had related to him what I hoped the Lord had done for my sould together with the strange condition my soul was now in and of my doubts of an intrest in the blessed Redeemer he very affectionately with a smiling countenance informe me he believed my soul was converted + that the present trial I was under was the trying of my faith to which all the Children of God ware subject more or less + for a confirmation of this quoted many texts of Scripture among the rest the following "Behold think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as tho some strange thing happined unto you I Peter IV.12 this gave me singular satisfaction, whe [?] he expacia [?] -ted upon the cause of the doubts etc. of Gods Children amongst many other things he observed this that by being remiss in our dutys the Lord would chastise us for it + in the General they ware of a Spiritual nature here I began to examine more closely my Condition in Religion + the relation dutys belonging theretoo, I now began to read not only the Holy Scripture but also all kinds of religious Books I could conveniently meet with + was determined by the Grace of God to follow that way that appeared to me to be the most consistent with the word of God + my own reason after a labourous search comparing Spiritual things with Spiritual and often strugling at the throne of Grace I was induced to believe the following sistem -- Unconditional Election, Predestination and final Persiverance of Saints through Grace, Also that it was my Duty to be Baptized by immersion + to join the Church of Christ in order to enjoy the priviledges of that Church accordingly (after many temptation + strugles in mind not only against Satan + my own proud heart but my near Relations) I offered

page_0100

12) membership with the Baptist Church as Shewaskey [?] M. H. under the care of Elder Martin Ross (being the most convinent at that time) accordingly was recd. into fellowship + on the 13th of Dec. 1789 was Baptized in the name of the father + of the son + of the Holy Gost by Elder Martin Ross -- having related the particular circum =stances as near as my treacorous memory will admit of that praduced my call to the ministry. I will in the next place pursue my intention by making a few observations on the internal + external call to the Ministry, first the internal call -- being now a member of Christ viseble [?] Church and in Ansr. to a good conscience towards God in complying with those duties nessary to become a member I considered my self as happy as our mode of existance would admit of injoying alternately unspeakable satisfaction in the fellowship of Gods dear children + attending the word of GoD + commemorating the dying sufferings of my blessed Lord + Master, tho notwithstanding I enjoyed frequently the Visitations of Gods Love I must confess with shame and regreat I often backslid both in thought word + deed + it was a means of bringing on my mind darkness + doubts and notwithstanding I had so much reason to believe the Lord had been made precious to my soul through the Gospel to my great confusion I was tempted several times to disbelieve the divine authority of the Holy Scriptures but blessed be God the temptation did not last long at a time at length I was again drawn out to lament the danger to which my fellowcreatures ware exposed in there uncon =verted estate knowing therefore the terrors of the Lord I wished to perswaid men -- but a thought of this kind would never fail to make me unhappy for fear it

page_0101

13) origaneted from pride or at least some deception or other from a dread of this I quinched the impulse from time to time + continued to do so for a considerable time untill I found my mind was uncommonly burdned -- I will here take the liberty to mention a temptation as I call it while I was uncommonly exercised on the above subject I had a suggestion of mind that it was the intention of Satan to dishonour God + religion by me that as I had made profession of religion he was about to urge me to attempt to become a preacher and after I had assumed that Caecter he would through his influence lead me into forbidden paths, then I would return as the Dog to his Vomit + as the Sow that was washed to her wallering in the mire and the natural consequence would be an excumenaction would take place + then the World would cry out aha, aha it is just as we would have it, they are all so if they ware found out, this wracked my mind + for some time I was not well convinced but what it was from the Lord, but for certain reasons which I shall assign hereafter I believe it was from the Wicked one, thus I continued striving agst. every impulse towards attempting to a willingness to preach the Word of God sometimes I thought I had conquored the Suggestions but being several times at the House of God where his word was preached with power + having a Spiritual interview with my blessed redeemer viewing in the mean while the assembly knowing in a measure the Value of these precious Souls, my Bowells would earn for there eternal Welfare to such a degree it would be almost out of power to refrain from exorting them, at the same time drawing up in my imagination that perhaps the next meeting we should have would be in Eternity but I still resisted the impulse untill I contin

page_0102

14) contracted so much remorse upon my conscience I frequently was under keen conviction I had frequent suggestion thus you have reason to believe the Lord has menefested his love to you by Virtue of which you are in a Savible state, you read he hath ordained that by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe" and will you be so ungreatfull as not to tell your fellow creatures of the danger they are in by nature + of the goodness + Love of God "God works by whome he will" and the wisdom of the World is foolishness with God -- thus it appeared to me the almighty charged me with ingratude Oh! this filled my heart with grief hre I was in a strate, [halted] [?] between two oppinions not knowing what to do wheth =er to obey or resist the impulse -- In order therefore to act (as I thought I was willing to do) according to the Will of God I resorted to prayer + reading his word for dir =ection on the subject it turned on my mind to open the Bible + prehaps the Lord would direct me by that I concluded in my mind to open it indiscriminately and the first Chapter I cast my eyes on to read it through which I did it being the VI Chap of the prophet Amos the first verse of the Chapter after reading of it pressed on my mind with uncommon weight, altho I continued reading the Chapter through after that the force of the words ware repeated being these "Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountan of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whome the house of Israel came! It may not be amiss here to observe how the

page_0103

15) word well [?] applyed to me -- In the first place I appeard to be the person that was at ease in Zion + that I discovered my self to be in a savible state had gotten into the Church or Zion and was at ease notwithstanding there was something for me to do and that was to preach God's word to my fellow creatures + if I continued to resist those secret [?] impulses of the spirit the was mentioned in the Text as above quoted would inevitably insue to add to this the following text was applied with equal force "woe is unto me if I preach not the Gospel!" I Cor. IX 16 how I was struck with amazement there appered to be Violence [?] offered to my will my very sould quaked + trembled to think I must attempt to preach God's Word, what be a mouth for God's amazing thought I was struck with confusion - it amediately brought to my mind the conference the God of Heaven had with Moses in the Desert when he commanded him to go + petition King Pharoah for the realeas of the Israleites, Moses excused himself saying I am slow of speach, and I could say with respect to my self that I was of a Stemering [?] Tongue = I also plead my weakness + inability also having but a slender [?] Education, I could draw up in my imagination many who had the advantage of a good Eudication added to good natural abilities + my language would be O Lord send them, my mind was thus exercised for nearly a Weak only grew more + more distressed - I continued beseching the Lord to shew me my duty in that particular till at length I felt willing to bare all the scoffs + snears of my nearest friends. Yea even death itself if I was called to it if I could only act so as to please my blessed God under this impression not finding any care in my mind as I did not as yet submit to attempt to preach there was a secret impulse continualy saying go + preach the Word of God my mind being so harassed [?] I took a walk to a neighbours

page_0104

16) House thinking it might perhaps ware off but after I arived my mind was still labouring under the same burthen I soon retired + as I was returning quite alone through a large field there appeared to be presented to my imagination as if the large opening was filled with people all in an unconverted [?] state + the God of Heaven frowning on me because I would not warn them of their danger. O reader I am a loss here for words to reveal my idea, a cold thrill pearced through my very Soul. I took corage at last + cryed to God with a Vocal Voice that he would speak to me face to face as I might know his Will + that I might not be deceived, by the time the words ware out of my mouth a moment it darted in my mind, was I able to stand in the presence or hear his Vocal Voice. a treamer pearced my Soul for fear I had highly offended him. It was amediately shown to me it was my duty to obey the call I had already received. I then submitted + promised the Lord by his grace I would surmount all those difficultys + go forward in my duty as I discovered that was to preach his word + that too the very opportunity. amediately a calm insued my Soul rejoiced + I felt all submission the Sunday following being 12th June 1791 according as I had promised I went to meeting held at Skerwarkey M.H. and attempted for the first time in a publick manner to warn poor sinners of their danger while continuing in an uncoverted Estate -- having taken a letter of dismission some time before this from the Church at Skewarkey + joined the Church at Cashie which at that time had been without a paster from the Death of the Revd. Jeremiah Durgan who in his life time had the care of it

page_0105

17) the Church soon afte called called a Conference + petitioned the Revd. Robert Henry to attend as a temporary pastor Abt. the month of Augt. 1791 the Church licensed me to preach soon after gave me a call to take [?] the pastroal charge of them this appearing to me to be a charge so sacred + important + considering my own innability I fused but from there repeated calls together with the solicitations of my Bretheren in the ministry I complyed with there request + on the 6th of July 1794 was ordained Pastor by the impositions of hands by the presbytery, thus far the Lord has brought me through the different periods of my life + his protecting hand (blessed be his name) are still extended in my support thus I have been trying in the [was] [?] of God shameless towards him + man from the month of July 1787 to this time it being July 1798 + seven years of this time have been trying to labour in the Gospel Vinard [?] + so far from being wary of Labouring as a servant in the cause of Christ (I speak it to the Glory of God) I find greater reason to still persivere through the grace of God to the day of my death -- And now my dear reader be ye whome you may think not the proceeding observations [illegible] out of a fit of Lunacy or intherum [?], but can assure you they are the result of a calm impartial sincear + deliverate investatation of the nature of man in his fallen estate, the Word of God + his divine attributes from the time of the first dawn of them to my mind to the present period. should you discover any thing in the preceeding pages that gives you cause to Glorify the exalted redeemer. give God the Glory, and should it ever be my unhappy lot for the World the flesh + the Devil to get the assendency of my mind so as by my conduct to dishonor God + his holy Religion, dont think any the less of pure religion, without which no man can enjoy

page_0106

18) peace in futurety - And O that God may bless the antieceding observations to your soul reader, as the [illegible] prayer of your well wishes in the Lord -- A. Spivey

I will lastely give an abstract of my religious creed

A biographical sketch of George Outlaw -- The regular baptist church of christ at Cashie in conside -ration of their high esteem for their deceasd brother George Outlaw, have determined to record the following sketch of his life and death --

George Outlaw was born of respectable parentage on the 25th day of October in the Year of our Lord 1771 in the County of Bertie. For the early part of his life he was fond of the fashions and amusements of the world, thoughtless of eternity and the concerns of his Soul -- In this pursuit after worldly pleasures, he advanced to

page_0138

to about Mediocrity of Life -- At the age of about 20 he married Elizabeth Bryan with whom he enjoyed all the pleasures attendance on conjugal life for 25 years + by whom he had four children Mary, Harriet, George + Joseph, + she afterwards became a very pious zealous + devoted Christian--

The time was now advancing which was to form a vastly interesting and important crisis in his Life -- Unknown to him in his course of worldly enjoyment, the appointed time of God was fast approaching when the mighty power of divine Grace should arrest his Soul, and a great and gracious revolution be affected in his future life and character -- The churches previous to this time were in a cold state. The time to favour Zion had however come. About this time there were many spiritual and powerful ministers who frequently preached at the Bertie Union Meetings and within its limits, among whom was Elder Lemuel Burket who belonged to it -- The subject of the present sketch was among the earliest fruits of the revival in the Bertie Union Meeting in AD 1802 --

His first religious impressions were received under the ministry of Elder Burket, who was preaching in a very animated and powerful manner and the congregation generally much exercised -- At this time the thought struck him, should the things which the Preacher declared to be true what was his condition -- The impression fastened on his heart and became the foundation of his future exercises of mind -- From this time he became convinced of his Sin and guilt, and experienced the alarm and distress of a Soul which was ever itself condemned by the holy Law of God -- His conviction seems to have been of a strong and distressing nature -- Under these operations of divine grace we have reason to believe that our departed brother experienced that repentance, that needed [?] not to be repented of -- The first comfort and relief which he experienced in his distress was from a Sermon preached at

page_0139

at Cashie Meeting house from this text "That as Sin hath reigned unto death; even so might grace reign through righteousness by Jesus Christ our Lord -- The time of his final deliverance and attaining a hope in Christ was at a Union Meeting holden at Wiccacan Meeting house under the preaching of Elder William Brown Elder Brown preached from the Text "Who is on the Lords side? after he had concluded his sermon, brother Outlaw rejoiced [?] aloud in the midst of the congregation telling the people that he had formerly been a candidate for the Assembly, but that he was then a candidate for Heaven + happiness -- His transports [?] were so violent, that he exhausted himself and was carried to a shade perfectly prostrated -- The violence of his feelings and exersions was such as to bring on a violent discharge of blood from the Lungs, followed by a severe and dangerous spell of sickness -- He shortly afterwards professed a hope in the Redeemer, and was baptized by Elder Aaron Spivey, and received a Member of the Cashie Church, at which he was long an orderly and useful member -- He was for many years Clerk of the Cashie Church, which office he filled as long as he lived -- He was generally called also to preside as Moderator in the Chowan Association -- His value and usefulness was not alone confined to the Church but as a member of the community at large, he was many years Chairman of the County Courts of Bertie about thirty years, Senator in the North Carolina Legislature of which he was many years president and a representative in Congress -- In the year AD 1816 he was deprived of his first wife + in January AD 18 he was again married to Mrs. Frances Smith, by whom he had three children WIlliam Frances + Jordan

page_0140

Brother Outlaw lived to enjoy a second glorious revival of Gods work in the Year AD 1824 when his eys were made to see glorious things and his heart made to rejoice + praise God for his wonderful goodness to the children of Men The early fruits of this revival was his last wife his son Joseph + his wife Hannah them he saw at one time follow him he loved into his [illegible] grave and was often heard to say it was enough, that he was ready to depart in peace --

The Biographical sketch of Benjamin Folk decd

The great Sovereign of the Universe has determined from among the falled Sons of him, to select for himself a people who shall show forth his praise, by living in obedience to his precepts -- Of such characters is his kingdom on earth composed; + such a character we now propose briefly to delineate -- And surely we can find no more interesting subject for contemplation, than the humble Christian, who having the love of God shed abroad in his heart, tramples under foot all wordly vanities, + seeks with delight that eternal city, the new Jerusalem, whose builder + maker is God

Such we believe was our beloved brother Folk, who departed this life on the 24th day of August last (1831) in the 60th Year of his age -- The Youth of this excellent man, prior to his faith in Christ, was marked by nothing extraordinary, like others of his age, whose hearts have never been [turned] [?] to the praise of God, he was pleased + attracted by wordly amusements, to the neglect of tha

page_0168

other part, the immortal soul -- But in the Winter of AD 1802 it pleased God, who in his own times performs his pleasure, to enlighten the mind of our departed Brother, by the quickening influences of his holy Spirit -- He thus discovered himself a lost Sinner, without the interposition of divine mercy; + finding help in no other, he fled to Christ Jesus as revealed in his precious Gospel, + found peace + joy in believing in him -- Our Brother was not slack in openly professing himself on the Lord's side -- He accordingly attached himself to the Church at Cashie, + was on the 2d Lords day in February AD 1802 by Elder Aaron Spivey [buried] [?] with Christ by Baptism --

We need adduce no other evidence to show what piety was exhibited in his deportment than to state, that on Saturday before the 1st Lords day in April 1805, he was chosen by the Church to fill the important office of Deacon -- Those who were longest and most intimately acquainted with his Christian course, can best bear testimony to his faithfully discharging the duties of his office -- He was ever among the first to enquire into the wants of the needy of the Church, + to propose measures for their relief; + surely we err not in saying that the hearts of many have been made glad by his individual appropriations to their wants -- Indeed it is loosing him as a Deacon that his loss is most felt by this Church, + we surely are not falling into a [train] [?] of eulogism when we say his place in this office will not be easily supplied -- Let us now notice briefly some of the prominent features of our brothers character and 1st we would mention that liberality of feeling which he over indulged towards those, holding sentiments differing from his own For although he was strictly Orthodox, Yet he was no part of a Sectarian When speaking of other Christian denominations, he would often say that although they believe not in every point as we do, Yet if they exemplify the religion of our blessed Saviour by pious lives, we should regard them as our brothers + as travellers to the same celestial City -- That we should never let our partialities for nor prejudices against any sect blind the eyes of judgment, but that wherever we discover to christian exercise, their should our love be [fixed] [?]--

Another leading trait was his great tenderness towards offen -ding brethren; deeply feeling the depravity of his own heart, and knowing the [illegible] infirmities of our nature; he was

page_0169

lenient in his reproofs; + ever sympatized with a brothers [missing] We have more than once heard him say, that as mercy will some -times melt the heart of him, whom fear will not alarm, so cha [missing] -able forbearance will often gain to us our brother, whom stricter discipline might cause to stray, still farther from the fold of Christ -- How often have we seen him shedding tears of regret when it was necessary to reprove disorderly brethren -- It was his greatest delight to behold brethren, living together as children of the same parent, heirs of the same inheritance, united in the closest bonds of christian love + affection --

Another distinquishing feature which characterized this amiable man, was his habitually cheerfull disposition -- True his sky was not always serene; but the healing beames which eminate from the sun of Righteousness, were sometimes interrupted by [illegible] of darkness; + then doubts harrassed his mind, + would perhaps drive peace from his bosom -- Yet he being eminently pious, God was pleased to bless him, with much of his holy presence; + while thus enjoying the presence of God he was habitually cheerful -- And this cheerfulness of disposition seems not to arise from any thing of a light or frivolous nature, but to be the result of entire resignation to all the decrees of divine providence, he confidently believing "that all things work together for good, to those that love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose --

Tracing our beloved brother in his domestic relations, we discover the same spirit of tenderness + affection marking his conduct; As a husband he was ever kind; as a Father truly tender + affectionate; As a Master merciful + kind + as an obliging and kind neighbour he will long be remembered

But death has severed all these ties + left us, to mourn for our deceased brother, Yet we should not mourn as those who have no hope -- For those of us, which knew him best, feel convinced, that he has exchanged this for a happier state of existence -- For though during the former part of his last afflication, the [inducies] [?] of his gracious state, seemed to be somewhat darkened; Yet in the end of it, it pleased God, so to strengthen his faith, as to make him perfectly willing to

page_0170

[depart] [?] + be with Christ -- According to his request Elder Reuben Lawrence preached his funeral sermon from the words "Mark the perfect man + behold the upright for the end of that man is peace" -- The discourse was peculiarly affectionate + pertinent to the occasion; for evry one must have felt that the character spoken off in the text, was none other than the character of our deceased friend + brother --

Let us therefore who are left as his survivors endeavor to live as he did, that like his, our end may be peace ---- Amen
