St Louis Dec 31st 1847

Dear Sir

I hope you will not think me impertinent in asking a favour of you. But judging from your general character, I have been induced to think otherwise. I wish you to obtain for me the appointment of Commissioner for the state of Tennessee to take acknowledgements of deeds and depositions &c. I have just commenced the practise of the law in this City, and without some office of that kind, it will be hard work, to make any bread, for some little time, as young Lawyers labour under a great many disadvantages, especially in large cities. I am the nephew of Thos. I. Campbell, of East Tennessee, the present Clerk of the house in Congress, for further particulars with regard to me, I would refer you to Mr. Thos Simpson of your city.Dr Edgar was well acquainted with my father. By attending to my request you will confer a lasting obligation on me. I was introduced to you during the canvass of 1844, in my uncles office, in athens

I am with due regard yours &c
