Dear friend

In answer to thine, I can only say that the schoolmaster referred to is no longer living. The young woman was Harriet Livermore, a daughter of Judge Livermore of New Hampshire - a

brilliant singular character. She has been abroad in the Holy Land, Egypt and then East [?] of the [?] for the last 30 yrs.

I retain an interest in the little poem, which was written to [beguile?] heavy hours of pain. It has been received with far

more favor, I fear than it deserves. No one can be more [sensible?] than myself of its defects.
