Mary Ruth Slaton diary, 1944

Friday July 14 1944 Robert has been sick today and in bed most of the day. We washed some and I moped and waxeed the kitchen floor Mrs Jones came this afternoon. I read some tonight. Robert is asleep and seems better.

Saturday July 15 1944 Robert is better. Rex and i went to town this afternoon. Robert stayed at home with Mother and uncle Brack. I went to Dr Finley and took my second typhoid shot. I then went to the show.

Sunday July 16 1944 Mother, Rex, Robert and I went to town this afternoon and went to see Lin and Jessie. Jessie wasn't feeling so well. I read some tonight. Robert is a lot better.

Monday July 17 1944 I ironed and done the general house work. I made some soap and canned 1/2 gallon of tomatoes. Miss Cassie came a little while. Elmer Ray Gipson has been here today playing with Robert. I read some today and also tonight.

Tuesday July 18 1944 Rex went to town today. Court met. I canned 1 1/2 gallons of apples and 1 qt of tomatoes. Mother and I made 2 gallons and 1 pint of kraut. Miss Cassie came a little while. I read some.

Wednesday July 19 1944 We washed today. Rex wen't down on the River this afternoon to the sheep eating and will stay until tomorrow afternoon. I went to Mrs Jones and saw her daughter Mary this afternoon. I got a birthday card from Rudell. She sen't us 2 of Jimmy's pictures.

Thursday July 20 1944. I ironed. i canned 1/2 gallon of tomatoes and 2 gallons of apples, made 4 jars of jelly and 1 gallon of plum marmalade. alma and monroe came a little while this afternoon. Rex cam home. Mrs Jones and Mary came a little while late this afternoon.

Friday July 21 1944. I canned 1 gallon of apples and mother cleaned up the house. We washed a few pieces this afternoon. Fred Jr Slaton came a little while. Mother went to Mrs Jones a little while. I patched some.

Sat. July 22 1944 We all wen't to town today. i took Robert to a Barber shop and had his hair cut. then I took him to jessie's. I went to Dr Finley and took my last typhoid shot. I then went to the show. I went to see Gene twice today. Mother and uncle Brack wen't to Aunt Ermie. Jessie wasnt feeling well. I got a letter from Kathryn.

Sun. July 23 1944 Rex, Robert and I went to Loyd's a while. Then we went to the Island through the Bottoms. Our old house is all torn down except the chimney. We came back by Rays Slaton's and stopped a while. We had company while we were gone. albert edna jim and amelia and mrs jones and lee and callie came tonight

I canned 1/2 gallon of tomatoes and 1 gallon and 1 qt of apples i stoned some i mowed some in the yard and read some

we washed mrs jones came this afternoon robert and i went to miss cassies a little while and took uncle brocks clothes for her to wash lee and callie came a few minutes late this afternoon i read a good deal

Wednesday July 26 1944 I ironed and canned 1 gallon and 1 qt of apples. Mother, Uncle Brack, and I cut off apples to dry this afternoon, moped and waxed the dining room floor and waxed the front porch floor. I read some. Lee and Callie came a little while.

Thur. July 27 1944 I canned 2 gallons of apples. We canned 1 gallon of plums and made a little over 1 gallon of plum preserves. I moped and waxed my room floor and also the hall floor. Mrs Jones came this afternoon. I read a little.

Fri. July 28 1944 I moped and waxed the back porch floor and also the kitchen floor. we washed a few pieces. I washed my head lin lawerence and gene come a little while tonight

Sat. July 29 1944 I canned 1 qt. of tomatoes. Mr. Daugherty came a little while this morning. Rex & I wen't to town this afternoon. I wen't to the Show. I read a little tonight.

Sun. July 30 1944 I am 33 years old today. Lawrence, Gene, Dorthy, Mrs. McClaren and Lin came & spen't the day with us. Miss Cassie Wiley came this afternoon Rex, Robert & took a drive late this afternoon.

Mon. July 31 1944 Miss Cassie came early this morning. I canned 1/2 gallon of tomatoes, 1 gallon & 3 qts. of apples, and made 1 qt. Beat pickles. I ironed a little. Uncle Brack, Mother & I cut off apples to dry today also. I read some.

Tue. Aug 1 1944 We washed a large washing today. Uncle Brack, Mother & I cut off apples to dry this afternoon. I am real tired & feel bad tonight. I read some.

Wed. Aug 2 1944 I canned 1 qt. of tomatoes & 3 qts. of peaches. Mr. Jones gave us the peaches. I made 5 qts. of apple preserves. We ironed some. We worked in Grapes this afternoon. A. W. Sisk ate dinner with us. Robert wen't to town with Rex. I don't feel well. I read some. Mr. & Mrs. Jones came a little while tonight.

Thur. August 3 1944 I made about 5 qts of grapes preserves & made 4 gallons 3 qts. of grape juice. It rained a hard Rain this afternoon. I read a good deal.

Fri August 4 1944 We cleaned up the house this morning. A. W. Sisk ate dinner with us. We looked for company this afternoon. Stella told me she would bring Bill Hanner to see Robert but didnt any of them come. Rex and Robert and I went to Lee and Callies tonight. Their daughter and husband was there and a Mr. and Mrs. Corum.

Sat. August 5 194 I canned 1 qt of tomatos. Rex, Robert and i went to town today. We ate down in town then robert and i wen't to Jessie's. I stayed at Jessie's a while then I wen't back down in town.

Sun. August 6 1944 Mother Robert Rex and I went to church at Liberty today. Both of Mrs. Lyons daughters were there. Mrs Hopgood and Mrs Thomas came this afternoon. I read some today and also tonight.

Mon. August 7 1944 I made 1 1/2 gallons of grape juice. Mrs Jones came this morning and brought us some peaches and some white Grapes. I canned 1 gallon of peaches. ironed a few pieces. Mother went to Mrs Jones this afternoon. Rex and Robert went to Aunt Jessie's & i went to see alma and Monroe. I got the curtains that alma gave me for my hall.

Tue. August 8 1944 I canned 6 gallons and 1 qt of peaches and made 1 gallon grape juice. Miss Cassie came a little while. I read some tonight.

Wed. August 9 1944 I canned 1qt of tomatoes and ironed some and have done the general house work. Mother and I made 6qts and 1 pint of kraut this afternoon. I got a letter from Lorene Weir. Rex, Robert and I wen't to town after ice. I read some tonight.

Thur. August 10 1944 We washed a large washing today. We worked in the grapes this afternoon. I am awful tired. I canned 1 gallon of grapes. John Marion came a little while tonight.

Fri. August 11 1944. I made 6 pints of grape Jelly & made 1/2 gallon of grape Juice. We ironed. Rex, Robert & I wen't to town after ice this afternoon but couldn't get any. We wen't to Earlington but the ice plant was closed, so we didn't get any ice.

Sat. August 12 1944. I canned 1 qt. of tomatoes. We all wen't to town today. Mother, Robert & I ate down in town. Then Robert & I wen't to Jessie's. Mother to Aunt Ermie's I wen't back down in town & went to the Show. Rex & Fletcher wen't fox hunting tonight.
