Mary Ruth Slaton diary, 1944

Thursday 1944 June 8 Loyd come this morning. Rep went to town. Court met. Rep got 2 new glass doors today. I wen't to town with Mrs. Jones and Callie. Mrs. Jones and I got a new Permanent wave. I couldn't manage the one Marie gave me so June 9 decided to get a new wave. Friday 1944 I haven't felt so well today. I painted the iron bed I aim for Uncle Brack to sleep on today. Miss Cassie Wiley come a little while this afternoon. Mother went to see Mrs. Jones and Callie this afternoon.

June 10 Sat 1944. Mother, Robert, Rep, and I wen't to town this afternoon. Robert wen't to Jessie's. I got 3 new dresses and Mother got 1. Mother and I wen't to Jessie's a little while. Rep went fishing tonight. Sunday. 1944. Robert and I wen't with June 11 Callie to Sunday School and church at Grapevine this morning. Loyd and Jasper come this morning, Mr. and Mrs. Ton James, Clarance and Nell Gatlin, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gatlin and their nephew. Lin and Dock came this afternoon.

June 12 Mon. 1944. I have done the general house work and painted the iron Bed again. I went to Mrs. Jones this afternoon to see [Joe?] Nell Jones but wasn't any of them at home. I went to June 13 see Callie a little while.

June 13 Tuesday 1944. We washed even if it did rain some before we got through. It didn't rain much. I went to Miss Cassie's this afternoon and took Uncle Brack's clothes for her to wash.

Wednesday. 1944. I painted 2 chairs. June 14 We have been changing the furniture in the kitchen and Uncle Brack's Room. We out the china closet in Uncle Brack's room and will make a dining Room even if we do have to have Uncle Brack's bed in there. Callie has been here twice today. June 15 Miss Cassie come and so did Mrs. Jones Thursday and Wayne Jones. 1944. It has rained today. We ironed. I wen't to Mrs. Jones this afternoon and saw Joe Nell Jones Callie was there also. Cifton Jones and Wayne came a little June 16 while this afternoon. Friday 1944. Mrs. Jones come a little while this morning. I brought back our ice cream freezer. I washed some, have done the general house work and made some soap. Clarance Jones came late this afternoon, Lois, Rex, and Clarance went to. Saturday. 1944. Mother, Rep, Robert, and I wen't to town today. I got a new purse and got Robert 2 Sun-Suits. Mother, Robert, and I went to Jessie's and ate dinner. With them I wen't to town this afternoon and wen't to the show. It has been awful hot today. Sunday. Rep, Robert, and I 1944. June 18 went to town this afternoon and got some ice. They didn't let us have but 2[S?] lbs. today. We wen't to Mr. Will Eldirdge's a little while. Read some tonight. It has been awful hot today. Monday 1944 June 19 I ironed this morning and have done the general house work. I painted my utility cabinet, cook table, water table and the table we eat on this afternoon. Mrs. Jones came this afternoon. I mowed a little in the yard. Read some tonight. the island tonight. They wan't to catch one of Rep hogs.

Mon. 1944 June 26 John brought alma and Monroe this afternoon. Monroe is sure a cute kid. I wen't home with Alma and helped her carry Monroe. Mr. and Mrs. William Slaton Tuesday. 1944. came tonight.

June 27 We washed a large washing. Such a hot day. I read some this afternoon. I went to Miss Cassie's late this afternoon and took Uncle Brack's clothes for her to wash. Callie came. few June 18 minute and gave Wed. 1944. us some peaches. I got / to make a pie. most of the ironing done. Miss Cassie came a little while. Such a hot day. I wen't to Loyd's this afternoon. Modest Will [rip?] two of my dresses. Ruby is some better.

Thursday. 1944. June 29 I finished ironing and have done the general house work. I mended some clothes this afternoon. I dressed a chicken. I read a little tonight.

1944 Rex wen't to town June 30 today. Court met. Friday We washed. Some boys came with 2 1/2 gallons of Black Berries and I bought them. I made 3 qts. of Jam and will make some Jelly tomorrow. I moped and waxd the kitchen floor. / 1944 Mother wen't to Mrs. / July 1 Jones a little while. / Sat. I read some tonight. / Mother, Robert, Rex and I wen't to town this afternoon. Mother wen't to aunt Ermie's. Robert and I wen't to Jessie's a little while. I read some tonight.

Sunday. 1944. July 2 We all stayed at home all day except Rex. He wen't to the Island. I read some and took a nap. I don't feel so well Mr. Elmer Wiley 1944 / and Bobby came a little July 3 / while today. Monday. I ironed and have done the general house work. Robert and I wen't to Mrs. Jones this afternoon. It rained while we were there so we had to walk home in Tuesday. / the mud. It July 4 / wasn't very muddy. 1944. / I read a little. Mother, / Rex and Robert wen't Rex, Robert / to John Marion's and I went to / a little while / late this afternoon. Mrs. Rodgers this afternoon. [Is?] a Soup eating. There was a good many there and we all had a real good time. We had lots to eat.

Wed. 1944. Aunt [Ermie?] Fowler July 5 and Uncle Gus and Mr. Gavin Hopgood came this morning. Rex and I were the only ones that had gotten uo. Aunt [Ermie?] stayed with us while Mr. Hopgood and Uncle Gus went berry picking. They stayed until nearly 11 / July 6 o'clock. Robert and I / Thur. went to Miss Cassie this afternoon / 1944. and took Uncle Brack's / We clothes for her to wash. I read some today / washed. and also tonight. Miss Cassie and Mrs. Jones and Harold Sisk came this afternoon. I feel awful bad late this / 1944. afternoon and tonight. / July 7 Friday. I have felt real bad all day. I ironed and have done the cooking and Mother cleaned up the house. I have been in bed part of the afternoon. I read a little. Modest and Jasper came a little while this afternoon.

Saturday July 8 1944 I dont feel so well today. Robert Rex and I went to town this afternoon. I went to Dr Finley and got some medicine and took the first typhoid shot. Robert and I then went to the show, we bought us some clean. I dressed a chicken when I got home.

Sunday July 9 1944 Callie came and asked us to go to Sunday School and church with her but as I didn't feel so well I didn't go but Mother went to see Lee and Callie this afternoon.

Monday July 10 1944 I havent felt so well today. I washed 5 pairs of hoes and have done the general house work and read some. Miss Cassie came a little while. Callie came also.

Tuesday July 11 1944 We washed. Mrs. Jones came this afternoon. I patched Rex underwear. It rained some this afternoon. I read some.

Wed. July 12 1944 Basil Slaton, and his two boys came this morning. Rex wasn't at home. I ironed today. It rained a good big rain this afternoon. I read some tonight. I patched some.

Thursday July 13 1944 I wen't to see Alma this morning but she wasn't at home. I stopped to see Mrs. G. L. Lynn & her baby a little while. I got a letter from Aunt Ermie Fowler. Robert Mother & I wen't to Mrs. Jones this afternoon but she wasn't at home. I wrote a letter to Alyene Rogers. I read some tonight.
