Mary Ruth Slaton diary, 1944

Sunday April 9 1944 Easter Sunday David Moore & Harold Sisk ate dinner here today. Mother & I helped Robert find some Easter eggs. We all wanted to take a drive this afternoon but Miss Cassie Wiley came before we got to go.

Monday April 10 1944 It has rained hard all day. Mother and I & worked in the Living Room today. We put down the rug and Rex hung the blinds and I painted the hearth. Read some tonight.

Tuesday April 11 1944 Rex went to town today. Court met. I have done the general house work. I went to see Callie Wiley this afternoon.

Wednesday April 12 1944 We washed a large washing today. I read some this afternoon.

Thursday April 13 1944 We ironed and I painted the Back Porch ceiling. I washed a few pieces for Robert also. Read some tonight.

Friday April 14 1944 I waxed my room floor and ironed a few pieces. I started covering Uncle Brack's chair but didn't get it quite completed. Rex killed a small hog today. He sugar cured it.

Saturday April 15 1944 Mother, Rex, Robert & I went to town today. I got Robert some white shoes and had his hair cut. We then went to Jessie's & Mother went to Aunt Ermie's

Sunday April 16 1944 Robert, Rex & I went to the Island this afternoon and I got some flower slips. That was the first time I had been to the Island since we moved.

Monday April 17 1944 I set out the flowers this morning & painted some this afternoon. I painted Robert's chair & my cook table in the kitchen. Lawrence Gene & Jim came this afternoon. Louis was here for dinner.

Tuesday April 18 1944 Mother washed some today and I washed a few pieces for Robert. I painted 3 doors in the kitchen & covered my foot stool. Miss Cassie Wiley & Mrs. Jim Smith came this afternoon. Sis & Jessie came also. Louis was here in dinner.

Wednesday April 19 1944 We washed today. Louis was here for dinner. Robert & I went to Mrs. Jones & got some flowers slips this afternoon. Loyd came this afternoon and fixed 2 of our window screens. Lawrence & Gene came this afternoon & took supper with us.

Thursday April 20 1944 We ironed this morning. Callie Wiley came a few minutes this morning. Loyd ate dinner with us. He is working on our window screens. I painted part of the Back Porch walls this afternoon.

Friday, April 21,1944 I work on my back porch screen and Mother got dinner. Miss. Cassie Wiley came a little while. Rex went to town. Mother & I washed the front porch walls this afternoon. Rex, Robert & I went to Mr. Ed. Sisk a while tonight. Rex paid Uncle Alonza the telephone dress. He was the only at home.

Saturday, April 22,1944 I finished painting the back porch walls this Morning & Mother got dinner. Mother, Robert, Rex & I went to town tonight and I to the show. Mother & Robert went to Jessie's. It rained awful hard tonight.

Sunday, April 23,1944 I washed my head this Morning. Rex, Robert & I went to Mrs. Rodgers this afternoon and Marie gave me a new permanent wave, a machineless wave.

Monday, April 24,1944 Mr. Ed Brackett & daughter & Mr. Luther Porter came this Morning. They wanted to see us about our Pleasant View coal. We didn't sign the contract. Louis was here for dinner. I mowed some in the yard put in 3 window lights and covered Robert's chair. Read some tonight.

Tuesday, April 25,1944 A. W. Sisk & Louis were here today for dinner. They were working for Rex. Mother & I washed. Robert & I went to Miss. Cassie's & took Uncle Brock's clothes for her to wash. We then went to see Alma & Monroe. I read a little tonight.

Wednesday, April 26,1944 We ironed. Loyd came a little while. Rex & Louis went to Pleasent View to fix the fence so he can put some cattle down there. I washed some windows & mended some clothes. It rained some today. I got supper tonight & read some.

Thursday, April 27,1944 I have done the general house work this Morning. I painted the front porch floor this afternoon and the back porch floor also. Rex & Louis went to Pleasant View to fix the fence.

Friday, April 28, 1944 I painted the front porch floor & washed some for Robert this Morning. Mother, Robert & I went to Mrs. Jones this afternoon. We got the chair they gave Robert. Louis & Rex went to Pleasant View today.

Saturday, April 29,1944 Rex went to pleasant View to work on the fence. Louis ate dinner with us. Mother & I cleaned up the house. I painted 2 of my kitchen chairs & Robert's truck this afternoon. Mother, Rex, Mother & I went to John's tonight. The men went fox hunting.

Sunday, April 30,1944 We aimed to take a Drive and go to town and to Jessie's but company came this afternoon. Mrs. Jones, Aunt Jessie Slaton, Mary & Stella came. I was real glad they came. I wasn't very anxious to go to town any way.

Monday, May 1, 1944 I painted the back porch floor this Morning & got dinner and have done the general house work. I painted some in my room this afternoon. I got part of the doors, one window & the mantle painted. Gene & Lawrence came tonight & took supper with us.

Tuesday, May 2, 1944 I finish painting the windows & doors in my room. Mother & Uncle Brack washed. I felt bad today and cried. Mrs. Jones came this afternoon. Rex & Louis finish fixing the fence at Pleasant View today.

Wednesday May 3 1944

We washed today and I washed part of my windows this afternoon.

May 4 Thursday 1944.

Rex and I went to town today. Count met. I went to Jessie's and washed 4 of Uncle Brack's quilt and 1 of my Blankeys even if it has rained. Nearly all day.

May 5 Friday 1944.

I ironed and finished washington the windows in my room.

May 6 Saturday 1944

Rex, Robert and I went to town today. Robert and I went to the show. We went to Jessie's a few minutes.

May 7 Sunday 1944

Rex, Robert and I went to church at Liberty today. Lin, Hermon come this afternoon. Miss Cassie Wiley came also. Rex went to the Island this afternoon.

May 8 Mon. 1944

Mother washed a quilt and her clothes. I have one the general house work and mowed the yard. Lawrence and Gene came this afternoon and took supper with us.
