and water for to provide dry land for Terrestriall Animals
Rocks (as bones) were created to hold up ye Earth of ye hills ab-
-ove ye water; and so both ye upper surface of ye Earth, and ye nea-
-ther of ye water do become uneven. Drops indeed of water are
round, but 'tis not so much from ye nature of ye Element, as 'tis
from ye nature of a fluid endeavouring to hold its continuity,
for hereby it is obliged to flow as near as possible to its own pro-
per (namely ye Drops) center, and therefore by consequence into a round figure (as is before noted).

[*2*] Mutuall transmutation by wch they respect one ye other and are
changed one into another. this is (say they) either,

[*1*] Sociall; when 2 Elements club to make a 3d - as when fire &
water are turned into air (this they supposed to be in ye Evapo-
-ration of water, but indeed) this is a common mistake; for ye
water is but Divided into lesser parts Dispersed and carried away
else-where; but remain water still.

[*2*] Solitary; when one Element is turned into another (as much to be
Doubted as ye former). this is either Mediate or Immediate.

[*1*] Mediate, when one Element is transmutedby ye mediation of
another; as water into fire, by being first turned into air. and
such are called [Dissimbolies?] (ie: wch agree not in any of ye 4
Qualities) for fire is hot and dry, water is cold and moist.

[*2*] Immediate, turned immediately; these are Symbolies wch have
some one of ye first Qualities common between {them}, this air
and water agree in Humidity [?] : - but indeed all this of trans-
-muting Elements seems to be but goats-wool; for there's eith-
-er no such change, or if there be, they are neither simple bo-
-dies nor Elements, for this wars with their former motion
in ye Definition of principles; where they say {that} they are nei-
-ther made of one another, nor of any other bofies; now Elements
may well be accounted principles. and this may suffice conce-
rning Elements in Generall.

Chap: 7 :
of Elements in Speciall, and first of Fire

[*Red line across page*]

Elements in Speciall (according to ye Peripateticks) are four
fire, air, water, and Earth; as (they say) was collected (by
Aristotle) from te Combinations of ye 4 first Qualities, so as
there are 2 of {them} in each Element one in ye highest, and ye
other in remiss Degrees. thus fire is most hot and Dry;
