East Florida

are so much required, and will in a Soil free of Grass and Weeds become
an easy Labour. (Observe), That the Fields in East Florida are never
to be hewed or plowed in the hot hours of the Day, whereby much of the moist=
=ure is exposed to the Sun's Exhalation, which moisture is to be increased, at
least preserved. The only times for hewing or plowing, are before Sun-rise; but
better at the hours of the trading Sea Breees, and best at Sun-set; but in a
rainy Season all hours of the Day are fit for hewing or plowing, unless such
hours, when the Clouds grow thin, and more so, if they begin to move from before
the Sun.
17. I have above advised, with good reasons, drawn from Experience,
that the Vines should not be taken from Countries situated to the North of
Burgundy, I would now recommend Lucca, situated upon the Medi=
=terranean, in the VII Climate, for gathering the Olive Plants, as that Country
is renowned for the Production of the best Olives, viz the great Ones, which
are th ebest for pickling, when greenl as the pickling of the Olives is performed
with Sea-salt-water, it being the principal Ingredience, this Province, especially
Cape Florida, is bordered by a Sea much richer of Slat, than that of Lucca,
the preference will be given to the Olives pickled in this Province.
18. Alhtough I have advanced several necessary Observations which
I think worthy of Attention, and which chiefly fall within the Bounds of
the European's Recognizance; whilst on their side of the Atlantic Ocean,
I shall, however, have much more to say hereafter, relative to Occurrancies
strictly concerning East Florida, when they land those Shores.
19. Since all good Success in such great Undertakings of cultivating and
improving Deserts, chiefly depends from the Vigour, and HEalth of the Body
and Constitution, I think it highly necessary to chew from my twenty years
Experience in the V and IV Climates, but what Diet and Regimen new Cololnists
may preserve their Vigour, and Health from the time of changing the European
and for the time of continuing in a new, and warm Climate; and to make
every Man a Judge and Guardian of, and over himself, my Advices are,
1st to abstain in hot Seasons from boiled Meat and Fish, from all manner of
warm Broth, or Liquids, and to eat no warm Victuals, but such as are
roasted, and drink none but moderately cold Draughts in common Diet, altho'
when a Regimen of Perspiration requires them to be warm; of which I shall
be more particular hereafter. No Draught should be pure Water, but mixed
with a little good Rum (bad Rum is by all means to be avoided for the reasons
given
