and a Chart of the Atlantic Ocean of my Hydrometrical Performance,
and conclude with the Object of Beacons, to render thereby the Navigation
on the Bars of the INlets upon the Atlantic Ocean practicable in time of
bad Weather when Pilots are prevented from venturing out the Habrours
to bring in Vessels which are either in Distress without, or are bound in,
which Object has carried my Attention to a Place more anxious for imme=
=diate Remedy to guide and aid those who navigate the Gluf of Mexico thro'
that dangerous and inevitable Passage between the Island of Cuba and the
Promontory of East Florida, as from which depends the good Success of the
Spanish Flora, conveying from Cuba all the Riches collected there from
the Manilles, Mexico, Perou and Cili; although their Flota
consists but of few Vessels, yet their Cargoes are precious. This
Passage is navigated by a great Number of English Vessels, which trade
in the Gulf of Mexico, the greatest number of those (who unhappily end
their Navigation in this Passage) are English Saliors, with the Sauses
and Remidies of their Disasters. I fill, of the Work in hand, a whole
Chapter, as far as it is in my Power, and as far as it depends from
Astronomical Observations and Navigation, but since good observ=
=ations too often fail for want of Opportunity, many unhappy Navigators
will end their Period upon the low Promontory of East Florida, which
shews no Land-mark in the highest Places at a greater Offing than four
Leagues, at which Distance Vessels in Danger are generally passed
all Remedies.

My Duty of Office, Humanity, Fellow feeling nand public
Interest call upon me to shew by what means this Navigation may
be made safe, and those relieved as are Suffers by the Violence of irre=
-sistable North and East Winds.
The Elaboration of this Work, fit to be laid before your
Majesty,, requires longer time than it is in my Power to detain that
Object which is so anxiously demanded.
I am therefore pressed to lay with utmost Humility
the Particulars thereof without further Loss of time, before your
Majesty, and rather postpone the finishing of my Report, in which
I intend to be more precise upon that Subject.
