we have made. Take common, simple, easy
words and stick to them. Keep pupils at
it, let, them, pronounce to each other.
Get the attention fixed and get a little
fun out of it. The way to learn to spell
is to spell. Notice similar and dissimilar
words. Pupils may begin to learn
diacritical marks in the Second Reader.
Phonetic spelling for small pupils should
be by ear. Make it a part of every day's
work and in large schools combine with
reading lessons. If pupils hesitate in
spelling a word, stop him and let him
look at the word. Insist on learning doubtful
words first and then take new ones.
In Second Reader take wider contrasts
and more word building. Have them
write sentences. One reason why spelling
should be begun early. Correct misspelled
words by writing them right. Do not have
it as a punishment. Now we may increase
the number of words, write more, hint at a
definition, but always restrict to child
words. Do not go after strangers. If there
is time, go off on excursions after words.
Some pupils can do this and some cannot.
