CHEPPO TRIBUTE PAGE

Bitch Bitch Bitch

1. I'm pissed that my mom and brother live in Chicago now and that so many of my friends live far away. 2. I'm pissed that rent and shit is so high in this town. 3. I'm pissed that there weren't any Whore-o-Scopes or a Dear Fag Hag column in the last Issue of the Fag Rag. 4. I'm pissed that there aren't any really good clubs in this town. 5. I'm pissed that I can't afford any new records right now. 6. I'm pissed the Grifters haven't been here again sooner, like, now, goddamnit! -BUT 1. I'm happy that there are so many new, good local bands right now! We had quite a drought there for a while. 2. I'm glad that my new roommate has three newts. When I asked what their names were, she said Jonie and Chachie. Hello- there are three of them, but only two names- I dunno maybe she should lay off the pot for a while. 3. I'm glad my bestest friend Susan is back and giving me her TV and VCR. 4. I'm glad I can walk to Sound Ex now from my house. 5. And last of all, sweet reader, I am so, so happy that you are reading my humble piece of writing.

I want to preface this article with something I've been wanting to write about for a really long time: it seems I'm not much of a rock critic. You may have noticed this. Every once in a while I'll come up with some witty, descriptive little nugget that pinpoints exactly what it is about a band or a song or an album, but this is rare. Usually, for lack of any real talent, I'll resort to the "Yeah, this rocks!" school of criticism. This is why I rarely review any of my truly, deeply, intensely favorite bands. (Another reason is that I like to try to keep something personal, although I usually don't do a good job of it.) There are just a few records/shows/bands that leave me so completely at a loss that all I can do is think about them and sometimes talk about them. I particularly have a hard time with Pavement (esp. S&E), the Pixies, the Grifters, the Velvet Underground to a lesser degree, Paul's Boutique, and Flaming Lips shows oh, and the recent Thinking Fellers Local 282 show. Anyway, I'm young yet, so maybe my skills will evolve with time and maybe, oh, thirty years from now I'll be describing emo bands as "gutbucket" and writing articles about how it was to be young in the days of the first (out of several, by then) of the punk revivals for Rolling Schmeg...

I guess it was December 6, a Thursday, my memory isn't all that reliable. Susan and I limped our way to Houston in my dilapidated yet faithful automobile, Ruth. The Grifters were playing at the Urban Art Bar. I don't know if you've heard, but if you're ever lookin' for Susan and you find out there's a Grifters show within a four-state radius of Texas, it's a pretty safe bet you could find her there. And I'm getting to be that way, too.

So we traveled. We hadn't done a road trip together since oh, the night before (San Antonio). BUt really, before that we hadn't been on the road together much at all, so we were havin' a great time. Little did we know the drive home would be hell.

The Urban Art Bar is a pretty cool club with a big, Liberty Lunch-esque space with some furniture toward the back (a sofa, a couple o' chairs and a coffee table exactly like the one at the Satans' house, minus the plaques) and great lights and good sound and a little room in the back for the bands to hang out in.

The show was incredible as always. I wish I had written about it right when I got home (I'm gonna have to start doin' that) cause I never can recall the itty-bitty details of a show, which are always what makes a show so great, unless I'm talkin' and rehashin' with someone who was there, too. All I can remember right now was that they didn't play Soda Pop, which is probably my favorite live song, and they did play Queen of the Table Waters, which I had never heard before. I also happened to know how drunk they were and that made it all the more impressive of a show, I was amazed they could actually do it. I wish I had known I wasn't going to see them the next night.

We hung around for a while after the show, and then when we were more or less sober enough to drive, we cruised and ended up in a perilous fog for a good half of the drive back. It was awful! And we were in a bad mood. But we made it home in time for me to get about an hour and a half of sleep before I had to go to work. Yeah, yeah, I know we're rock'n'roll martyrs, we don't need yer sympathy.

RekeRds:

Cryin' Out Louds/Motards split 7" I'm Possessed & Hangman Lager b/w Nothing Ever Changes & Unhappy *I love, love, love this stuff, but at this point, even I have to admit that it is getting kinda predictable round these parts and I'd definitely rather see these bands live. Still, this is a fine record with the Motards sounding shitty and the COLs sounding slightly less shitty.

[a poorly-reproduced thumbnail image of each side of the above split 7"]

The Humpers 7" (Sympathy... Fast, Fucked & Furious b/w For Lovers Only The rock'n'roll just leaps off of this one. As a matter of fact, when congratulated for their endurance after their two raucous Austin shows, one of 'em replied, "Hey, that's rock'n'roll." Listen to this in your car and run over pedestrians.

Grifters 7" (Sub Pop) Queen of the Table Waters b/w Return to Cinder *Sub Pop?!? I'm still kind of in shock when I see the Sub Pop logo on the sleeve, but then I am in near constant contact with some heavy duty indie-rock politics gossip/debaters. So, this record is beautiful and haunting and dark and shiny and it spins round and round and fucks my head all up which is exactly what a Grifters record is good for. Thank you, Sub Pop for a very pleasing product.

Hormones 7" (Unclean Sell Out Young b/w You Can't Win *Catchy as fuck! Great '77 punk-pop. Recorded before Tim Hayes and Dana Barclay jetted. This a-side is Tim's, the b-side is Ron's.

Grifters/Fluffy Kitty split 7" (Cherry Smash Dildozer b/w I Had *Disclaimer- I've only heard this record two and a half times (Grifters x 3, FK x 2)... The Grifters cut is a good, solid specimen, but contrary to what I expected, the Fluffy Kitty cut is the one that really intrigues me. I had never heard of FK before I got this record, but they have really drawn me in and just yesterday I sent off for more info. I am anxiously awaiting some excellent mailbox candy. A note to the aesthetes: Comes with a neato hand screened sleeve.

Big Drag 7" (Unclean) Gotta Let Me Go b/w I'm a Lonesome Fugitive God, and I said the Hormones single was catchy. The a-side is sweet, sweet stuff, and they show their country roots on the b-side. I guess it'll hold me till their full-length record comes out.

[low-quality thumbnail of cover appears to the left of the review]

Satans 7" EP (EV Records) Get Off My Back & Ain't Gotta Choose b/w (I Can) Only Give You Everything & Run Motherfucker *It's hard to believe this record really exists, but believe it, baby. People listen to this record everytime right before they say "scorchin'." If you don't have a garage, but you want to feel like you're in one (for some reason), get this record- it really works. Oh, and send some shit (and I mean shit) to your favorite Satan c/o the Satans Fan Club.
