The third Stage of inquiry ascertains what truth there is in those experiential consequents of the hypothesis that Deduction has drawn, estimates their argumentative value, and passes final judgment on the hypothesis. Its characteristic mode of reasoning is Induction. The previous explicit mental selection of the proposition to be tested is essential to its high logical validity, and when this rule is neglected the reasoning degenerates into Retroduction.
