Sunday 14 Some Bread and coffee about
9 oclock feall very bad. Skirmishing
all day. Some wounded & killed at 6 ock
in teh evening the rebels attacked our
forts with their heavy guns a general
fight commenced. I was shelled out
of the hospital took my stand with our
Reg behind the Rifle Pits at the Star
fort until nearly dusk retired from
the Rifle Pits at the request of Lieu
(__) a regular stampede with the
wagons and cavalry I fell Back with
the Cavalry a Stampede on the martinsburgh
rode -- order restored again. Shot and shell
falling around me until 1/2 Past 8 oclk
when the firing ceased our Big fort fired
the last shot advised by Doct Brown not
to return to the fort until morning I
took his advice and laid down in the porch of
a house where there was some wounded I
awoke about day brake and learned
that the entire (__) had moved off towards
Harpers ferry The rebels had over
thirty Guns and 18 if our troops
had (__) (__) in any engagement
they did in this fight
