[Centre] 21 Monday

Still on the soft job. In morning
A.D.M.S. came & asked for 6 Carpenters
to work on Rest Station at 15th field Amb.
They put me on without asking. Marched
to Sailly & made a start. To build shed 99
by 12 of 4 rooms. In evening walked to
Fort [Kingston]. Tommies leaving there for
second [reports] Somme. They don't like it.
Cemetry. Camped in operation tent.
[Centre] 22 Tuesday
Started at 9 am. Major going to leave
us alone. Thunder storm in night
plus guns & machine guns. We got
the floor plates down. In evening
went to pictures in Sailly. They
were old pictures I had seen
before, one being The Cry of the Children
Gas alert. Guns silent next to us.
[Centre] 23 Wednesday
Scotch going through in [Illegible]. They were practicing today.
Cutting out roof plate all day. All
the want here working like Navvies.
A.D.M.S. came & is very well satisfied.
with our job. In evening huge guns on
caterpillar wheels drawn by 2 Machine
Engines arrived to shafe La Bassee, Aero
report presence of civilians in Germans
trenches so many of the tommies are arriving
Our Aeroplanes were up all day. At
night the bombardment was like hell let loose
[sure] fritzy must have got on badly. Another
gas alert.
